To be free, means to be a freak. Whether as a DJ, label manager, T-Shirt creator or all-round talent – since two decades, Ellen Allien is one of Berlin’s exceptional phenomena that have created her own universe with the combination of old school-based underground love and contemporary experimental spirit. After the lovely musical affair with Thomas Muller for the track „Free Nation“, for her new solo release we hear the anniversary bells ringing. The three tracks – which are co-produced by Martin Eyerer and Skinnerbox – already mark the 300th catalog number of BPitch Control.
The „Freak EP“ is not only the result of the last months in Berlin; it also flags up the change to Ibiza, where Ellen uses the warm season to spray her positive vibe during her residency in DC 10. „Butterfly“ acts like the kick-off and not only host graceful 808 pinpricks, with the dreamy melody in the background a nostalgic aura raises that reveals Ellen’s warmer side. Especially the bass rumble emphasizes the physicality of her music in an impressive manner – in short: pure love. „Come To
Me“ is desire and passion within seven and a half minutes. In addition to the deep house frame groovy beats pushes in the foreground that sets free a hypnotic mantra. Spineless dancefloor magic that rewinds time with the haunting rave signal, floating Roland synths and the SH101 raveline. With the title track „Freak The Night Away“, Ellen once more succeeded in creating a hymn that embodies both the slogan of every great night as well as the strong atmosphere of her energetic DJ sets. Again, we hear Ellen’s charming voice – crazy, playful, creative. Following the motto: just go! With rattling claps and a warm bass, dancing won’t become a compulsion; the track clearly goes under the skin with its 303 acid hints as well as Roland piano sounds and opens the gate to another dimension. A stunning release! Happy jubilee!

When I'm on tour travelling I like to do edits. While waiting in airports, cars, vans, trains, customs, hotels, soundchecks I do them. This is one of my favourites.

Sound design and techno experimentation are both familiar territories for Munich-born, Berlin-based audiovisualist, Monolake (Robert Henke). A name that 50WEAPONS are very excited to welcome to the family, forming part of their closing 12" series. This is the seventh opus out of ten in total, split between Henke and Anstam, with "VT-100" on the flip ranking highly in our books. Henke elects the unexpected, with a sampled live drum kit providing the reverb-rich percussion throughout the techno-inspired track. Six minutes of a well versed sound, turned on its head.

Monolake "VT-100" - Boiler Room Debuts

Just a few years ago, Daniel Avery emerged from a famous Scrutton Street studio where the likes of Andrew Weatherall and Timothy J FairPlay were regulars. Since then, he has gone his own way, releasing a machine made, proudly analogue brand of indie-electro-techno-dance music that has come mostly on Errol Alkan’s Phantasy Sound label. Mixing dark beats with dense and smoky synth atmospheres as both a DJ and producer, he knows how to cook up a metallic and menacing groove with aplomb. After impressing with his debut album, Drone Logic, in 2013, we're proud to invite him to this year's Lente Kabinet, Dekmantel Festival (together with Roman Flügel), and our mix series. 

The fabric resident kicks off his mix with some heady drones and deep, spacious grooves that are eerie and unsettling. The next 90 odd minutes sees him blend sublime acid, slithering synths and increasingly minimal techno into a seductive set that is expertly paced and seamlessly mixed. Perfect for the dead of night in some intimate back room, it shows a heady and atmospheric side to Avery that is truly compelling.
