The Root of all Evil

Our 29th release is the ZamZam Sounds debut of a fast-rising talent, the one Danny Scrilla, born Danny Pirkl.  Now residing in Munich after time in Berlin and London, Scrilla has carved a path through multiple labels including Civil Music, Rudimentary Records and several releases on Om Unit’s mighty Cosmic Bridge imprint.  It is these latter tunes that have brought him to prominence, and it was Om Unit himself that made the connection between Scrilla and ZamZam, a brilliant bit of A&R that we are very grateful for.  His sound avoids easy categorization - it is deeply rooted in traditional dubwise, while seeming to pull in rhythmic, textural and melodic inspiration from a futuristic revisioning of jungle, footwork and house.

"Higher Plane” opens with a gorgeous flute melody, pattering percussion, a test tone and a maternal bassline all floating in etheric bliss, woven through with gently decaying delays.  Almost imperceptibly other elements are pulled into the pulse’s gravity-well until the full riddim finally emerges, a restrained yet addictive 150 bpm rockers for sound systems on course to meet the rising sun. 

“Maroon" is a highly original silky steppers powered by rubbery sub and cyborg saxophone riffs with Scrilla’s signature woozy, detuned delay trails and synaesthetic holograms.  Alternating between half time and 4/4 propulsion, this subtle powerhouse of a tune has been championed on dubplate from DJs as varied as Rodigan and Toddla T.

Announcing our 12th vinyl release! TUBA 012 features the work of Doctor Jeep & Nigerian vocalist Magugu, throwing down at 170 bpm on two serious tracks. Rounding out the release is a digital exclusive remix from the badmanTMSV.

Doctor Jeep’s music has been described as “a style somewhere between the forward-thinking bass mutations of Cosmic Bridge, the grinding 808 electro of Swamp81, and the breakbeat-heavy sound of early 90′s UK rave music.” With releases on a wide range of international labels such as NYC's Trouble & Bass (R.I.P.), Vancouver’s Aufect Records, and Nottingham's Tumble Audio, and support from tastemaking DJs such as Claude VonStroke, Shy FX, Hannah Wants, J:Kenzo, Machinedrum, and My Nu Leng to name a few, the future looks bright for this multifaceted producer.

CHAD DUBZ created 'FKD' with WRDubs in mind and it's a heavy slab of wonked whomp and scattershot skank. The twists and turns in this tune are likely to cause delirium and possibly even some argy bargy in the dance. Watch out!

In 'Destroyer Of Worlds' much like the opening intro dialogue, JFO has created a weapon of seismic destruction. A deadly drone-steppa that will drop like a bomb in darker sets.
