Ce mois-ci, découvrons l'univers musical hors des sentiers battus de Pale Penguin.  Grigoris Savvidis est l'une des figures emblématiques de la scène électronique grecque. Basé à Thessalonique (où nous nous sommes rencontrés), il est DJ depuis plus de 30 ans. En plus de cela, avec la complicité de Freddie Wyatt, il a créé depuis 2011 l’événement «  the incredible Discoteca Internacional » (qui mélange musiques et influences des cinqs continents) au club réputé La Doze ainsi que dans différents endroits dans le monde. Depuis 2015, avec Larry Skg, il se concentre également sur leur nouveau « electronic afrotropicalismo label » : Shango records.

This month, let's discovered the unheard world music trip outside traditional paths of Pale Penguin. Grigoris Savvidis is one of the key figures in Greek electronic scene. Based in Thessaloniki (where we met), he has been djing for more than 30 years.On top of that, together with Freddie Wyatt, he is managing since 2011 the incredible Discoteca Internacional events (blending music and influences from the five continents) in renowned club La Doze and also in selected venues worlwide. From Lisbon via Berlin, Toada is on The MUSAR Show duty, serving a one-hour magical adventure of warm, emotive, dreamy and danceable electronic cuts, including some of his own material together with gems beyond the boundaries of club music. Dive in! 

Having been immersed in music creation since his teenage years in Lisbon, Toada intricate melodies combined with forward-thinking playful rhythms define the project, it is a unique musical venture providing a place where many influences meet to superb effect.

Earlier this year, Toada released his second album 'Acalenta' via his own label Plūma, 33 minutes of lighthearted, sizzling and simultaneously complex deep tunes aiming for a reinvigorating listening experience (we highly recommend to check it out!).

The MUSAR Show #57 - Toada

If you thought the Kiwis were a friendly, genial bunch then think again, The Wild Army has gone down under to rob, steal, conquer and plunder. 

Max Maxwell's Always Right In goes in with some bouncing big room house made to be heard on a big rig. Squelching bass, spoken word, smooth production and a breakdown for peak time as the delayed synths wonk out. 

Marcos Alonso's remix ups the wobble and squelch but makes it a more heads-down affair. Proper nailed down, deep house music that delivers.

Nick Munday goes techno with acid bass, arpeggiated arps, MPC drums and a whole heap of machine soul. One for the heads, the dancers and the ravers.

Marcos' Piece Of The Puzzle is subterranean house music that wobbles, burbles and slides along, driven by rhythm guitar. Synth melodies, SFX vocal snippets and smooth production go late night. 

Paper artist Kennedy takes Piece of the Puzzle, keeping things low and slow but adding a bit of extra fizz. Warped vocals take things leftfield.

What an absolute blast was Splore 2023!
Such an incredible mix of talent, beautifully curated stages and an eeeepic team behind the scenes. Was defo one of my favourite editions.

Had the pleasure to join the Fairy Squad and build a fairy Grotto for some secret boogies and naughty business during the festival. I really enjoyed bringing my Sunshine Fairy out!
Feel so grateful to be able to host the After Dark sessions at Wendy's Wellness once again and to meet and collaborate with wonderful people. 
That Friday night was an intense experience for us all with the storm.... actually I loved it haha nothing like some grounding and grinding in the mud.

Cookie @ Splore 2023 - Wendy's Wellness/After Dark

This track was my submission to an artistic challenge from Mesh, a record label and creative community. In this challenge, we were prompted to explore fractals, a geometric shape ubiquitous in nature. Fractals are defined as being recursive, self-similar at many spatial scales, and infinitely complex (at least theoretically). 

During my composition process, I was inspired by how the growth of many organisms and geographic features are guided by fractal laws. The spiraling of succulents, formation of ice and snowflakes, and the dendritic branching of trees and river systems are all variations on the same universal theme. 

The main melodic sequence of this track was repeated across multiple instruments, octaves, and tempos to represent self-similarity. I also attempted to create a sense of zooming in to smaller spatial scales via pitch effects, dynamic variation, and increasing melodic and rhythmic complexity as the song progresses.

Born in the dark streets of Cairo, grown to the unforgettable forests of Santa Esmeralda, spending its teen years in Bombay and Tangier markets, mature into the deep spacey Jungle of Ghana we proudly present you a new label from the land of the pyramids: SHANGO RECORDS invites you to an unheard world music psychedelic trip: like through a colorful kaleidoscope we will melt down Indian and Pakistani Vibes, Arab-Tek and Oriental groovy vibes, Afro-Beat rhythms n' pieces, Cumbia Tropicana flavors and cosmic Ghetto-Latin vibes into forbidden sounds of frenzied electronic dancefloor rituals. Outside traditional paths these driving grooves and polyphonic structures take the adventure seeking dancer to Dionysian highs and places never been before.

Hierapolis was originally a Phrygian cult center of the Anatolian mother goddess of Cybele and later a Greek city. Its location was centred upon the remarkable and copious hot springs in classical Phrygia in southwestern Anatolia. Its extensive remains are adjacent to modern Pamukkale in Turkey. The hot springs have been used as a spa since at least the 2nd century BC, with many patrons retiring or dying there as evidenced by the large necropolis  filled with tombs, most famously that of Marcus Aurelius Ammianos, which bears a relief depicting the earliest known example of  a crank and rod mechanism, and the Tomb of Philip the Apostle. The Phrygians built a temple dedicated to the mother goddess Cybele on the site probably in the first half of the 7th century BC. This temple, originally used by the indigenous communities living in the Lykos valley would later form the center of Hierapolis. When the Greek colonists arrived and built the city on the pre-existing pattern of settlement, the ancient cult of Cybele was gradually assimilated into the Greek religion. HusnuCanMarley invite you to a journey through time, space and sacred cities. This is his first release for Shango Records. These two tracks can give you hope, spirit and the holy ghost. Regndans and Alexander Barabash are taking a rest in Cybele’s temple.
