3 generations of The Jane and Mike Band sing the song that we invented 10 or 15 years ago, and is now even more relevant, when a new generation of developers and builders seem keen to make sure the area has less of what we really want - shops - and more of what they want, ugly 20-story blocks of flats and apartments.

This is an old, old song from Woody Guthrie but with new words from The Jane and Mike Band (2024). Just like Woody in the 1940s, Jane and Mike are protesting. They don't want the place they live ruined by having an out-of-Britain property developer demolishing all their local shops to put up ugly high-rise develoments of floor after floor of hugely expensive apartments. So, where is anyone gonna shop, then, geniuses? What happens when existing tenants are driven out by the new high cost of living in the area? What happens when the existing community is driven to the wall? Is this 'gentrification' or is it, more simply, locality destruction? (The developers say it's 'Homes not Retail'. Brilliant. Since when did high-rise flats count as 'homes'? And since when did new  residents not need shops?) It's not logic steering this development, it's greed, based in the Channel Islands.

This song is by Jane, but Mike was so inspired by her concern about mercury amalgam fillings for teeth, he sat down and wrote a crime fiction thriller on the very same theme.

Mike Scantlebury is a part of the band, radio show and song writing team known as 'The Jam'. No, Paul Weller he ain't. JAM stands for 'Jane and Mike' and you'll not just find them on Mixcloud but also Youtube and various websites and Blogs. It's modern songs, (in a folk idiom), radio shows in a 'Richard and Judy' idiot, and songs like 'Dit Dit Dit', (which, as we all know, stands for S.O.S. - good enough for The Titanic. Who knows, Salford might hit an iceberg, soon).
