I am thrilled to present a guest mix this month from Ice Cream resident and all round legend Hayelybabes. Listening to this mix you would never in your wildest dreams believe that she has only been spinning tunes for just a couple of years! She programmes this mix so well really nailing the Balearic brief…and to top it all off she put the mix together while heavily pregnant with her beautiful baby daughter Margo who is now just 3 weeks old! Tosi is a Tokyo-based DJ known for energetic, genre-blending sets that weave together house, disco, cosmic, balearic, italo disco, synth pop, and all-mix styles. In 2005, he co-founded the collective and label Timothy Really, becoming an integral part of the local scene. More recently, he’s been releasing hidden gem Re-Edits under the name C.O.M.P.A.S. alongside fellow collective member Sisi that have been championed by DJs across Japan and beyond.

And now, a little bit of JAZ

John Zahl, also known as JAZ, is a DJ and record collector based in New York, USA, well-known for his eccentric edits and oddball mixes. We managed to connect with John after he'd arrived back in NYC after a few months spent travelling.

His mix, which was actually recorded nine years ago for Sanpo Disco on NTS Radio, features many of his all-time favourite records. He tells us these are songs that he still loves, and which remain in constant rotation. We'd like to mention a few of the tracks, starting with the lovely slo-mo/Italo disco record 'Non Ricordo, Ma Piangendo', B-side of a rare 7" by Giancarlo Aspromonte. Pit Troja's 'Der Voodoo Mann' from 1985 can only be described as German hip-hop over a Moroder-esque bass-line, wonderfully eccentric, as advertised! The late great Björn Holm's 'Tid At Stå Stilla' from his 1984 LP Bortom Gränsernas Hav, takes us into Swedish synth-pop territory. The mix features a few of JAZ's own edits, including 'Cloud Worship' which has to be one of our favourite edits of all time, just superb. This is an exceptionally well put-together mix, and despite the wide range of material, it flows perfectly and naturally, as a good eclectic mix should do.

RA.1000 launches with Theo Parrish, live at fabric: a vanishingly rare club mix from the king of deep crates and impossible transitions.

There are DJ sets and then there are Theo sets. No matter how many times you've caught him in action, every time still feels like the first. Running hot, levels smoking, isolator working over time. You think you know dance music? Think again.

Parrish's debut on the RA Podcast is a milestone for the series, one we've sought for over 15 years. So it was only right that Theo led off our 1000th celebrations. Recorded live at fabric last December as part of RA's party with the London club for their 25th anniversary, this three-hour segment documents the crescendo of his eight-hour marathon. 

The Detroit legend doesn't release mixes often, and when he does, they're usually studio recordings: think NTS shows, his 100% Detroit edition of DJ-Kicks or classic tapes Body (1997) and Methods of Movement (2000). A capture of the Sound Signature boss on the dancefloor is hard to come by.

Sure, there's galvanising build-ups and crowd-pleasers, but laced throughout a Parrish beatdown are rarities designed to shock the system. In a business dominated by marketing, the vinyl master towers above thanks to a relentless hunger for lustrous melodies, moods and textures of all stripes, which he and he alone can fold into an inspiring and exhilarating joyride.

On RA.1000, blissful reggae precedes new wave disco; '80s R&B morphs into synthy techno; bleepy Chicago jack makes way for a poignant vocal ballad. It's Theo through and through. Once again, he proves that anything and everything is possible with the right records.
