BLACK & WHITE / A MIX FOR AUTUMN

It seems odd that the four-piece Wax Idols reside in Oakland, California. Especially considering the fact that the band’s sophomore LP "Discipline & Desire," out March 26th on Slumberland Records, embodies a dark, full, twisted sound: something that feels more appropriate to the foggy, damp British climate than that of sunny California. But that's Wax Idols -- zigging where other might zag, and always going their own way.

Compared to Wax Idols' debut LP "No Future" (a raw, hook-heavy punk effort written and recorded primarily by Fortune in 2010/2011 and released on Chicago's Hozac Records), "Discipline & Desire" is more a group effort as the band -- Jen Mundy (rhythm guitar/vocals), Amy Rosenoff (bass) and Keven Tecon (drums) -- contributed to the recording and writing process. Fortune dedicated herself to this record for over a year and the band were right there with her, playing with pattern, melody and stretching themselves beyond the comfort of unassuming hooks and into a darker, new wave territory. "Discipline & Desire" was produced and engineered by Monte Vallier (of Half Church and Swell) and co-produced by Fortune. Mark Burgess (of the British outfit The Chameleons) worked alongside Wax Idols & Vallier as an extra pair of ears and even played bass on the album closer "Stay In." Together they've crafted an album that's sleek and focused without being slick, and dark and intense without being at all humorless.

"Discipline & Desire" builds on Fortune’s debut full length effort in almost every way, rounding out as a far more complete record. The melodies are stronger, the vocals echoed and haunting, and the playing is at an unflagging level of intensity. First single “Sound of a Void” is a storming, full-throated late night anthem, while “Dethrone” and "When It Happens" shimmer and throb, perfect examples of Wax Idols' unique take on pop. Slower numbers like "Scent Of Love" and "Elegua" mesmerize and entrance, and the feedback-laced "AD RE:IAN" is nothing short of a masterpiece, punctuated by bursts of special guest Kristin Dylan Edrich's noise viola. Album closer "Stay In" wraps the up the album perfectly -- a mid-tempo melodic gem with a killer bassline and an uncanny balance of melody and atmosphere.

This is an inventive, brilliant record which solidifies the fact that Fortune is one of the best songwriters hiding in the shadows of the other California, where the sun doesn't always shine. But, judging by this fantastic album, she and her Wax Idols won’t be hiding for long.

Secret Circuit - aka Los Angeles producer Eddie Ruscha - holds a séance to summon the spirit of the dance floor on Afterlife (BIS005), the lead single from the forthcoming Tactile Galactics album. 

Secret Circuit’s second release for Beats In Space Records following last year’s Nebula Sphynx / Parascopic Rope 12” finds Ruscha working the arpeggiators and low-pass filters to a sequentially slavish but soulful effect, while introducing an entirely human element to the Secret Circuit skill set: vocals. “The voices echo in your soul, you feel them there. But are they really there,” Ruscha incants atop a billow of hazy delay at the top of the track.

The eight-minute ether world trip of the “Afterlife” a-side is backed by a slow churning, core burning remix by the unconventional Ukrainian house producer Vakula. Vakula uses his analog arsenal to push the frays of “Afterlife” into even further corners of the echo chamber, anchored by a backbeat, low-octave organ line that gives the track body with which to move. Ruscha completes the “Afterlife” journey with a procession of hand percussion in dub tradition.

Each 12" from Beats in Space Records features original artwork in considerate and serial form. The fifth 12" features artwork by Robert Beatty, the young Cleveland cyborg artist behind Three Legged Race and some of the most wasted album cover artwork ever. The 12" packaging constructed by Will Work For Good features a removable vinyl BIS logo cling.

Secret Circuit’s Afterlife will be released on January 29th, 2013 on Beats In Space as a limited edition 12” and digitally. Tactile Galactics will be released April 30, 2013. More on that subject soon.

The Piramida Concert by Efterklang & Copenhagen Phil was recorded live at Copenhagen's Royal Academy of Music Concert Hall in October 2012. Over the course of two sold-out nights Efterklang - plus Peter Broderick, Katinka Fogh Vindelev and Budgie (Siouxsie and The Banshees) - teamed up with classical orchestra Copenhagen Phil and German conductor André de Ridder to perform the Danish act's fourth album Piramida in its entirety. Staged for the first time at the Sydney Opera House in May 2012, the orchestral arrangements were written by fellow Dane Karsten Fundal and New York composer Missy Mazzoli. The Piramida Concert also features 'So', a song written during recording sessions for Piramida, and 'Vælv', a classical piece commissioned by Efterklang and composed by Karsten Fundal. The live performance was mixed to tape by Francesco Donadello in the Vox-Ton studio in Berlin.. The Piramida Concert will only be available digitally and as a limited edition deluxe double gatefold vinyl (one black, one white + CD inside), designed by Danish artists Hvass&Hannibal.

We are back with a bang. So lets get to it, and its two Russian producers Ildar Valiakhmetov and Maxim
Ryzhkov aka St. Savor with a track name that sums up the producers nicely!Mysterious Russian Souls is a summery melodic warm gem, deep yet punchy, and perfect for the summer. A great track thats been a staple of Hernans sets, and we can see why. Petar Dundov turns in a solid driver of a techno remix, and from the off you know its going to do some serious damage to some major dance floors. Awesome.
And to add to the already shimmeringly great package comes Ulrich Schnauss, the king of deep infectious layers, who turns in a spine tingling interpretation. Truly superb.
