'Red Valley' refers to the Welsh who left their homes between 1936 and 1939 to fight in the Spanish civil war against Franco and the rise of facism. Bennett says, "It's just my little nod to the humble people who saw themselves as global citizens and the responsibility that comes with that, and that their individual actions truly mattered".

The track, which opens with guitars and stomping feet, slips effortlessly into a gorgeous groove of dusty guitars and grumbling organs, all underpinned by Huw's simple but affecting bass work.

Experimental hip-hop/jazz quartet Bokoya team up with Cologne-based producer / guitarist Gianni Brezzo (Jakarta Records) for ‘Tangram’, the second single from their upcoming album ‘Minari’ on Melting Pot Music.

Bokoya describe themselves as a four-headed human drum machine that play impro-vised beat music. You can call it jazz if you like (all four members are graduated jazz musicians btw) but be ready to stumble over some Dilla, Kraut Rock, Ambient or Dub in the mix. We recommend their double-album ‘Hausensession’ (MPM 2022) as a reference point.

Gianni Brezzo's music is a bit easier to access but not less leftfield. Jazz is a major influ-ence, but it goes way further. On his album ‘Tutto Grosso’ (Jakarta, 2022), Brezzo rides a sonic wave similar to Matthew Halsall, Surprise Chef, El Michels Affair and BadBadNot-Good. 

The recording sessions took place at the Gottesweg Studios in Cologne where Bokoya and Gianni Brezzo jammed for three days and nights based on some basic sketches and beat. The sessions were edited and arranged after by Bokoya and Brezzo but no overdubs added.

‘Minari’ will be available as digital album and LP.

TOMC's second beat album in almost two years, "True Life" is an album filled with the history of beat music from the 1990s to the 2020s.

The album is a combination of "deep respect for the history of jazz and soul", "sound-collage like abstract hip-hop and trip-hop", "hybrid musicality with various rhythms similar to LA beats", and "a quiet listening experience that resonates with ambient music after the lo-fi beats movement. The result is a work that combines all of these qualities.

In addition, the album is unique in its deep knowledge of club culture, including medium grooves like rare grooves and neo-soul, house music, and even 2step.

This album is like Nujabes' "Modal Soul" in the 2020s, and is a dense piece of sampledelia magic similar to The Avalanches, Cornelius and others.

The album features three guests. H.Takahashi, the owner of Kankyo Records, where TOMC also works as a writer/reviewer, and one of the current frontrunners in nowadays Japanese ambient scene, pushes the quality of the balearic new age track, "True Life Again," to the extreme. Yutaka Hirasaka, a guitarist/beatmaker shows off his superb groovy playing on "Ubiquity. Hiroyuki Nakamura, a pianist and a longtime friend of TOMC, plays a key role in raising the quality of the three songs that form the heart of the album. He is like Uyama Hiroto in Nujabes’ works.

What TOMC expresses in its sound is a genuine wish for those who stand at the crossroads of their lives to live their "true life" with their hearts beating with excitement while being lost in their own positions.

Yes, this album may appear to be a complex work, with three deep "inner" suites and short interludes, but the result is very far from a sense of introspection or stagnation. Instead, the album is filled with sincere vibes that inspire and celebrate the lives of listeners living in today's uncertain society. 

This album is TOMC's first masterpiece, summarizing his extensive work from beats to ambient and beyond. We hope that this album will connect the cultures before and after the lo-fi movement and will be loved beyond the boundaries of the scene for a long time to come.

New Robohands LP ‘Palms’ is the fifth album from the London based instrumentalist and producer Andy Baxter. Moving towards different genres and arrangements from his previous albums, ‘Palms’ features duelling harp parts, tape echo, double bass and draws inspiration from artists such as Dorothy Ashby, Azimuth, Alice Coltrane and Toquinho.   In parts tropical and synth drenched, and in others stripped back and acoustic, ‘Palms’ is a journey back to saturated analog recordings of the late 60s and 70s, with a subtle modern layer of glitch FX and pitch control experimentation in places. The album makes also reference to classic releases from jazz fusion that feature the legendary Arp Odyssey synthesiser, used by artists such as Herbie Hancock and George Duke.  The seventeen track album features performances from multiple session musicians including Jim Piela on saxophone and Marco Cremaschini on Rhodes, with Baxter taking on drums, guitar, bass, keys and also mixing duties. ‘Palms’ is a new direction for his project and a record that thematically journeys into modern reinterpretations of jazz, downtempo, acoustic and ambient music.

Robohands - Tinted

The Globeflower Masters Vol. 2 is the slightly edgier and more grown-up sequel to Mark and Glenn's 2021 debut album. For this excursion, the Brighton-based duo wanted to lean a little further into their European film soundtrack influences, with inspiration mined from the works of Stefano Torossi, David Shire, and Roger Webb. This expansion of their sound builds upon the rich tapestry of cinematic funk à la David Axelrod, Serge Gainsbourg and Morricone that fashioned Vol. 1.

The Deluxe Edition of the album features five new tracks, comprising two new original recordings, a piano solo version of the closing track from the original album, and two remixes from Project Gemini and Andres y Xavi.

‘Shaded By Your Side’ takes things right back to the moody, dark and Axelrod-inflected sound of their first album. Much of this track was played in single takes to try and retain as much of the urgency and spontaneity as possible. 

‘Return to Salvador’ is described by the duo as if “Shuggie Otis and Marcos Valle have one too many caipirinhas and decide to visit outer space”. It fuses together Mark's space sounds and floaty pianos with Spanish guitar and busy, melodic bass creating a musical trip from the grounded and earthy sounds of Vol.1’ to the more upwards-looking and musically diverse sound of Vol.2.

The remixes give a different flavour to the release, but both pay homage to the original recordings. Sharing a mutual admiration for each other’s work, it seemed like a natural choice to ask Project Gemini to contribute. Here is what he had to say about his rework, “I’m a big fan of both volumes of Mark and Glenn’s ‘Globeflower’ LP’s and it was a huge honour to get a chance to rework one of my favourite tunes from Vol.2. There are many great layers to ‘A Voyage North’ so it was a lot of fun to choose my favourite elements, then put some Project Gemini flavours and sounds into the mix and create something new whilst hopefully keeping some of the spirit of the original track. A darker, fuzzier take on the album version”.

When Glenn first passed the original album to Steve KIW, his collaborator in Balearic production outfit Andres y Xavi, this was one of two tracks which he picked out as having some particularly Balearic DNA. As such, pushing this concept to its logical conclusion seemed like the obvious thing to do. There’s a shaded sunset sound paired with a 4/4 beat of Latin-leaning.
