From ambient soundscapes, down-tempo vocal tracks and slo-mo house, through to deliciously deep experiments, firing tech-house and acid grooves, “It Is What It Is”, the supremely exciting double-disc debut artist album from Stelios Vassiloudis, was released on Bedrock at the tail end of 2011. Then, at the height of summer 2012, came the first of a planned series of album remix packages featuring interpretations from some of the most exciting producers from around the world, fittingly titled “It Was What It Was”. Now, at the start of 2014, comes the next highly anticipated, super-exciting selection of remixes.

The original album is rich with the many vocal talents it hosts, one of the most glorious contributions coming from Astrid Suryanto on “Feed”, giving Russ Gabriel (whose name has been synonymous with UK Techno since 1993) the perfect backdrop to create an absolutely beautiful, fresh interpretation. The brilliant One Of Them (aka New York based Niko Dalagelis) continues with the beauty theme, taking the vocal contribution of Japan’s Tomomi Ukomori on “Green Is Blue” into a deeply chilled house excursion, whilst the Japanese music master, Satoshi Tomiie, interprets things a more upbeat manner that is equally enthralling for his remix.

Guy J’s work is always touched with a magic and emotion that few rival and his remix of “I Burn Like” is yet another example of why his productions are so special. This time the distinctive original vocals of Darren Murphy are meshed into a deeply hypnotic journey. In contrast, Wiretappeur (the production partnership between Florian Kruse, Nils Nurnberg and Stelios himself) turn “I Burn Like” into a seductive slo-mo vocal house masterpiece.

Dieb Audio’s John Dalagelis (brother of the aforementioned Niko) was heavily involved in the original album project and returns here with a delightfully adventurous, jazz-influenced, widescreen techno take on “Repetition”. The superb selection of creative remixes is brought to a finale with India’s Arjun Vagale joining forces with Spain’s Ramiro Lopez to put together a frenetic percussive acid interpretation of “What's That” (odd one out here as the original track first appeared on the Bedrock 14 compilation album).

Anyone open to the emotions on display here really should check out “It Is What It Is”, the original debut artist album by Stelios Vassiloudis, as it is much more than a collection of great tracks. It’s an exceptionally exciting, bold and brave body of music that defiantly stands the test of time, beyond fickle trends and fashions, and remains a benchmark release from Bedrock to this day.

Unlike their recent Drumcode release, ‘You Know’ is a deep house killer that will appeal to new and old fans alike. Using a number of melodies within both the bass line and melodic synth that sits at the back of the mix, these two elements harmonise together smoothly and create an ear catching juxtaposition that will get the dance floor rocking before the vocal roars over the track.

Legendary Tel Aviv-based DJ Sahar Z, resident DJ of Haoman 17 (the biggest and most prestigious club in Israel) has emerged as Israel’s finest DJ Talents, winning for three consecutive years the DJ of the year award, sponsored by DJ HaIr (israel’s most popular music magazine) and now owner and resident of the most famous underground club in Tel Aviv The Cat & Dog, with productions on Bedrock, Renaissance, Lost & Found and Definitive, and touring the World DJ-ing - Sahar Z is certainly on top of his game. 
Joining Sahar Z in the studio on this occasion is rising star Chicola. This young enthusiastic DJ and producer has released on the excellent Lowbit label and is DJ-ing around Israel and beyond. 
The title track Compulsive Disorder grooves along from the off, with its skippy feel and more than a nod to yesteryear in its vibe, while still sounding fresh and cutting edge is the perfect sound for this summer. Adding to the the retro nod, a fine acidic layer adds depth and toughens up this groover, while cool percussive hits add to this real winner of a club track. 
All Dat Funk is a filthy slab of percussive techie goodness, swaggering along with attitude and drive, retaining a deep edge but powering along. A hint of acid, some clever fx and sounds intersperse creating a tensely exciting serious workout. This seriously is a great track for dark smokey sweaty basements!

It’s official: Guy J will be mixing the next instalment of Balance Presents.

Guy J is well known among the underground dance community for his melancholic and emotion-tinged productions -think Hazui (co-produced with Sahar Z.), Geko, Fixation and the 2009 underground hit, Lamur- which has found a home on a diverse list of labels that includes Bedrock, Azuli and Tiga’s Turbo Recordings.

Being such a regular fixture on the international circuit, it’s incredible to think that Guy has never been commissioned for an official mix compilation before (2011′s 1000 Words excluded as that was an artist album), and Balance can’t be more proud of securing the Israeli maestro for his debut outing. Brought up on a diet of classic compilations like Northern Exposure, and listening to John Digweed’s Transitions radio show, you know that Guy has the right pedigree to deliver a classic mix for the Balance archives. “I think this is how I learnt about building up a mix”  he says. “John can do an intro, build-up, give you a taste of peak time and then finish it, and you can listen again and again and enjoy the mix each time. It’s like a good movie.”

On this incredible Balance mix, he has taken the essences of some of his best-loved tracks by other producers and filtered them through the prism of his own stunning sound, re-editing and reconstructing them to create a truly original listening experience.

“The idea of my mix for Balance is not to give just a regular mix of 80 minutes” Guy explains, “but to create, write and produce it.” This meant sourcing original tracks from friends and colleagues to work his magic on, as well as editing tracks less close to home and seeking permission to use them in his own special way. “I wanted to make it more special; to give the people who listen to it something that will be worth the time and creativity. Remaking tracks and remixing all thirteen of them to give a story is a hard mission – but I used every second I had to produce these tracks and to listen to what I had made.”
