It seems every pocket of New York City has spawned a well known rap group or hip-hop collective. Astoria, one of the neighbors to the “Queensbridge Flavor” is 15 minutes away from the public housing monolith that gave birth to golden-age trailblazers like Roxanne Shante, Marley Marl, Nas, Mobb Deep and the Juice Crew. The surrounding housing developments have largely lived in it’s artistic shadow.  The Brown Family along with it’s larger collective GhottaBeHood wants to put Astoria on the hip-hop map. It’s newest frontman Mike Brown (born Michael Charles Brown) is leading the charter. Michael was born in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. Living in the Vernon housing complex with three generations of family. His mother moved him and his immediate family to Astoria houses just before starting school. He caught the Hip-Hop bug early watching his older brother’s Fricshawn and Sha Brown huddled over the stereo passing cassette tapes back and forth. Shawn’s producer Risto, introduced him to beatmaking when he was 13. He provided production for his brother’s Ghottabehood collective and other local acts. Forever the introvert, he transitioned into rapping without telling anyone for nearly eight years. Releasing his debut single “Family Business” on his independent label LOVEuJEAN in 2019. His music touches on everything from personal anguish to absurdist humor, sometimes in the same couplet. A storyteller at heart, you’d be wrong to dismiss him as another "loquacious" rapper. His music demands repeated listens if only to get those head scratchers you didn’t get on your first go around.
