MMO Does Halloween

"Four Daughters" had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the Main Competition section, where it competed for the Palm d'Or and won the L'Œil d'or (Shared with "The Mother Of All Lies"). Director Kaouther Ben Hania's ("The Man Who Sold His Skin") film recently won the Gotham Award for Best Documentary Feature and has now been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary Feature. It is campaigning for an Oscar nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category but is also the Tunisian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. Ben Hania was kind enough to spend some time with us discussing her film, the journey it's been on since its world premiere, and more, which you can listen to or watch below. Pre-Globes Gambling Preview w/ David Long! - ORC 12/19/23

"Maestro" had its world premiere at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion. It is the second film to be directed by Academy Award-nominee Bradley Cooper following "A Star Is Born" and features him and Academy Award-nominee Carey Mulligan transforming into Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre. The two were kind enough to spend a little bit of time talking with me about their work on the film, and I also got the chance to speak with the film's Costume Designer, Academy Award-winner Mark Bridges. Dan Bayer also interviewed Academy Award-winning Supervising Sound Editor Richard King. All three interviews can be listened to below. A Behind The Scenes Look At "Maestro"

"Flamin' Hot" premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, where it received positive reviews and was later released on Hulu and Disney+ over the summer. Academy Award-winner Diane Warren has been nominated at the Oscars 14 times in competitive categories. This year, she's shortlisted for writing the song for the film titled "The Fire Inside," performed by Becky G. Nominated already by the Society of Composers and Lyricists and Hollywood Music in Media, she could very well earn her 15th competitive nomination this year for the song which has over 2 million views on YouTube. Warren was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work on the song, which you can listen to below. Great job with the Six Degrees Of MMO round 3 submissions.  We had a difficult time choosing a winner because of all the fun you had with them and of course, all the fun we had reading them.  This episode begins as we pick the winner of the round followed by our own Six Degree answers,  and then we choose a “Halloween” inspired round 4 challenge.

The bulk of this episode kick starts our re-watch of the Halloween franchise, a series of films sacred to Mike 1 and irresistibly critique-able AND appreciate-able for Also Mike.  We’ve had some fun recordings over the last year plus.  Though let it be known!!...this goes down as one of our instant favorites.

Although we don’t have a spoiler warning dance music interlude in this episode, you can easily parse between spoilers and non-spoilers if you’re allergic to the former.  Though we do encourage you overcome your allergy and just keep listening because this is one of our better discussions.

Our format for these Halloween franchise movie reviews opens with a production profile of cast & crew, specs, & behind-the-scenes information.  We enjoy comparisons to The Conjuring Universe pods (episodes 96, 98 & 99), mention the high school days of John Carpenter, and differentiate between the narrative through lines of the series at large as only an authority like Mike 1 could give.

The plot is simple on the surface, but as we break it down via a marvelous litany of worst then best scenes (most of which could be described as best worst), there’s a ton of ambition and complexity on display from the powers that be.  Legendary producer Dino De Laurentis, legendary stewards of the franchise like John Carpenter & Debra Hill, and of course, the filmmakers both credited and uncredited all have an impact on the story, and we relish every minute of this discussion.

If this episode is any indication, we shall thoroughly enjoy this rewatch series on the Michael Myers slasher films to come.  So stay tuned as we’ll work our butts off to get you reviews of all these movies building up to the movie event that is 2018’s Halloween coming out on October 19th.

Mike 1 has hailed this film as one of his all time favorites, and we produced perhaps one of our more researched and detailed episodes to date. Halloween II is beloved by true fans, and we try to do it justice in our full review here.  Though we hoped to cover both H2 & H2O in the same episode, best laid plans were thwarted by Michael Myers once again.  So we dedicated a full show to Halloween II and only Halloween II.  It was well worth the trouble.

We researched the heck out of this presentation as well.  So there are a ton of behind the scenes nuggets, quotes from interviews, and internet easter eggs to explore.  We also can’t stop ourselves from diving into ALL the ins & outs of the various plotlines.  We revel in the awesomely bad, the awesomely awesome, and the plain old bad alike.  However you take it, there’s a ton of entertainment and fun to be had during this re-watch and during our review. The “King Kong” that is the Ringer “ain’t got shit on” us (stick my chest out).

Go back & enjoy the first two installments in this Halloween series rewatch.  We covered the non-Michael storyline of Halloween III: Season of the Witch (or Which?) in episode 106. Mike, Mike, and Oscar take the trip to Haddonfield once again for Halloweens 4 & 5.  It may be 10 years later & a whole new cast of characters, but we get the return of the same old Michael Myers and his nemesis, the still unhinged and monologue happy doctor, Sam Loomis.  The Return is an excellent bad movie while The Revenge is perhaps an epically bad one. In either case, we have some fun breaking it all down in Part V of MMO does Halloween.

The anthology or potential cinematic universe of Halloween III: Season of the Witch was an epic fail.  We give you the full backstory on why & how they gave us these next two sequels in our production profile segments.  Then we dive as deep into the plots as our collective sanity might allow.  Though neither film would ever get a glimpse of a red carpet unless it was one stained in blood, these are both loaded movie reviews for us to savor.

MMO is primarily a film appreciation podcast.  We LOVE movies, and we love to love movies. Every once in awhile though, we rip some bad movies for wasting our time and for ruining stories we love.  This is one of those times.  Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers is a literal title.  This film nearly cursed the entire franchise, and things went from bad to worse with Halloween: Resurrection.  

Still, we do our jobs and profile both production stories for these films. One might argue that the behind the scenes drama was more compelling that put onto the screen.  WE would argue this and do argue it. So please enjoy how we unravel like Dr. Loomis and pontificate about all of the unforgivable sins of Halloween 6 and 8.  Thank the gods for H20.

We train ourselves like Olympians to bring you the Oscar Sprint. First Man & A Star Is Born our the latest OSPs we’ve dropped on the film world, and we thank you for listening to them as much as you have.  But this Halloween re-watch is beginning to break us down & turn us to the critical dark side. We cannot lie to you, and therefore, we refuse to speak kindly about these two god awful terrible films.
