"Four Daughters" had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the Main Competition section, where it competed for the Palm d'Or and won the L'Œil d'or (Shared with "The Mother Of All Lies"). Director Kaouther Ben Hania's ("The Man Who Sold His Skin") film recently won the Gotham Award for Best Documentary Feature and has now been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary Feature. It is campaigning for an Oscar nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category but is also the Tunisian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. Pre-Globes Gambling Preview w/ David Long! - ORC 12/19/23

"Maestro" had its world premiere at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion. It is the second film to be directed by Academy Award-nominee Bradley Cooper following "A Star Is Born" and features him and Academy Award-nominee Carey Mulligan transforming into Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre. The two were kind enough to spend a little bit of time talking with me about their work on the film, and I also got the chance to speak with the film's Costume Designer, Academy Award-winner Mark Bridges. Dan Bayer also interviewed Academy Award-winning Supervising Sound Editor Richard King. All three interviews can be listened to below. A Behind The Scenes Look At "Maestro"

"Flamin' Hot" premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, where it received positive reviews and was later released on Hulu and Disney+ over the summer. Academy Award-winner Diane Warren has been nominated at the Oscars 14 times in competitive categories. This year, she's shortlisted for writing the song for the film titled "The Fire Inside," performed by Becky G. Nominated already by the Society of Composers and Lyricists and Hollywood Music in Media, she could very well earn her 15th competitive nomination this year for the song which has over 2 million views on YouTube. Warren was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work on the song, which you can listen to below. "The Teachers' Lounge" premiered at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival, receiving critical acclaim for its direction, writing, and lead performance from Leonie Benesch. It went on to play many other film festivals throughout the year, ultimately receiving Germany's selection for Best International Feature Film at this year's Academy Awards. We begin our category reviews in our comfort zone, Best Original Song. Our list of nominees is star studded with Lady Gaga, Kendrick Lamar & SZA, Jennifer Hudson, Emily Blunt, and Tim Blake Nelson(?!). We have a group of films, all multi-nominated by the Academy & Oscar Sprint Profiled by us including A Star Is Born, Black Panther, RBG, Mary Poppins Returns, and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs. So there’s a ton to chat about with the songs themselves. Those chats then go on tangents into how these 5 films might fare overall, & you’ll get some race coverage here as well.

The basic format of the episode is a mish-mosh of two go-to types of MMO shows: the Oscar category overview & Best Original Song Retrospective. In all of those song halfisodes (there’s 12 in that series), we have always loved the break from film criticism as we do our best impersonations of Beavis & Butthead heckling / marveling over the music videos & all of the awesome & awesomely bad on display. We discuss the upcoming Oscar Night performances and what we hope to see, even though all 5 won’t get their time. Then as we do in our category overviews, we discuss why the nominee will win and why they won’t in an oratorical exercise only one of us is any good at, while the other just makes snide comments. 

We’ll introduce each song with a snippet and if available, some quick specs. Then  to wrap it all up, we do a final countdown of our top 5’s. This segment is humbly called Perfecting Perfection, and here, we fit in some of the many snubs we’ve mentioned along the way. It’s a fun format, and it brings out the best & worst in us, all of which we hope plays for good radio.
