"Four Daughters" had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in the Main Competition section, where it competed for the Palm d'Or and won the L'Œil d'or (Shared with "The Mother Of All Lies"). Director Kaouther Ben Hania's ("The Man Who Sold His Skin") film recently won the Gotham Award for Best Documentary Feature and has now been nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for Best Documentary Feature. It is campaigning for an Oscar nomination in the Best Documentary Feature category but is also the Tunisian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards. Pre-Globes Gambling Preview w/ David Long! - ORC 12/19/23

"Maestro" had its world premiere at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival, where it competed for the Golden Lion. It is the second film to be directed by Academy Award-nominee Bradley Cooper following "A Star Is Born" and features him and Academy Award-nominee Carey Mulligan transforming into Leonard Bernstein and his wife, Felicia Montealegre. The two were kind enough to spend a little bit of time talking with me about their work on the film, and I also got the chance to speak with the film's Costume Designer, Academy Award-winner Mark Bridges. Dan Bayer also interviewed Academy Award-winning Supervising Sound Editor Richard King. All three interviews can be listened to below. A Behind The Scenes Look At "Maestro"

"Flamin' Hot" premiered at the 2023 SXSW Film Festival, where it received positive reviews and was later released on Hulu and Disney+ over the summer. Academy Award-winner Diane Warren has been nominated at the Oscars 14 times in competitive categories. This year, she's shortlisted for writing the song for the film titled "The Fire Inside," performed by Becky G. Nominated already by the Society of Composers and Lyricists and Hollywood Music in Media, she could very well earn her 15th competitive nomination this year for the song which has over 2 million views on YouTube. Warren was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work on the song, which you can listen to below. "The Teachers' Lounge" premiered at the 2023 Berlin International Film Festival, receiving critical acclaim for its direction, writing, and lead performance from Leonie Benesch. It went on to play many other film festivals throughout the year, ultimately receiving Germany's selection for Best International Feature Film at this year's Academy Awards. This was fun.  As we’ve been known to do, we enjoy taking some diversions from the prototypical Oscar coverage and enjoy some other genres / more blockbuster entertainment.  We’ve reviewed the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Mission Impossible films, and now we’re reviewing the Conjuring / Warren Cinematic Universe.  

In this episode, we give you non-spoiler reviews of The Conjuring and Annabelle.  Next week, we’ll conclude our preview of The Nun, the fifth film in this franchise with another episode covering the The Conjuring 2 and Annabelle: Creation.  Of course, we’ll finish the series with a movie event pod reviewing The Nun.

So by way of introduction, we had lots of fun discussing the imperative movie studios gave themselves going into this new age of filmmaking: the Cinematic Universe.  Then we give you some basic information about paranormal investigator hall of famers, Ed & Lorraine Warren.  

Our non-spoiler reviews do get into some premise information, and we may give you the outlines or a few beats of later scenes.  But for the most part, we remain spoiler free.  We enjoy making fun of some of the genre conventions and worst scenes, and yet, even with the poorly reviewed Annabelle, we honestly had a ton of fun re-watching & reviewing these two films.

We’ve previewed the month of September featuring a profile of The Nun in episode 93, and we’ve also covered the horror movie trailers for Halloween in DatA 2 and Mandy in DatA 3. In episodes 75 & 77, we gave the full Oscar Sprint Profile treatment to Toni Collette & the terrific new horror film, Hereditary.
