In the summer of 2013, Above & Beyond performed some of their best-loved songs acoustically as part of a 15-piece band, across four sold out shows at London's famous Porchester Hall which formed the basis of the "Above & Beyond Acoustic" studio album. The album was recorded in the spring and summer of 2013 and features a 24-piece orchestra.

"The acoustic project is a reconnection with the musicians that we were before we met", said Above & Beyond's Tony McGuinness. "The songs have been on an interesting journey to get here because we tend to write in a fairly acoustic way anyway. We don't just stick a bit of vocal over a dance track - that's not how we work. We try to start with a song and it's usually only later down the line that we take certain elements from that song and progress them into a more dancefloor-friendly version".

With Above & Beyond "Acoustic", the group are putting aside their CDJs and lighting rigs to showcase their deeply-rooted musicianship and classical training. A band first and foremost, Above & Beyond are songwriters as much as they are DJs. Working with three singers, a string quartet, harpist, drummer and bassist, Above & Beyond are pushing the boundaries of dance music. Tony McGuinness sings and plays guitar, mandolin and ukulele, Paavo Siljamäki plays the grand piano and cello, and Jono Grant plays the Rhodes piano, guitar and vibraphone.

When deciding who should kick off our brand new Live @ Desert Hearts Mix Series, it was pretty much a no brainer to have our contest winner, Rachel Torro, do the honor. Rachel was our very first DJ to lead off our Desert Hearts Spring Festival and it was exactly 15 minutes into her set when the helicopter and police convoy came to shut down the event. With the music turned off and everyone hiding in their tents, a legal standoff with city officials led to one of the most tense hours in Desert Hearts history. We had no idea just how much that near catastrophic event would ultimately set the vibe for the entire weekend. When word got back to the dance floor that the party would go on as planned, Rachel came back on to the most glorious roar of celebration we've ever heard. That was followed by one of the most iconic moments we've ever experienced when an unknown hero on the mic announced, "Welcome to Desert Hearts ladies and gentlemen!"

Deep Jesus has always had a cult following amongst our family.  One and half years ago at our very first Desert Hearts Festival, we faced one of the most extreme weather weekends of our lives. The week leading up to the event we watched the forecast go from perfect weather all week to 20 degree lows with high winds during the weekend. The first two days of the event had a very radical survival aspect to the whole thing.  But oddly enough, it was that need for survival that brought our original crew together in the way that it did. It united our group of relative strangers and turned us into a family.  When Deep Jesus played the very first Desert Hearts sunrise on Sunday morning, it was like the party gods descended from heaven to reward us for making it through the weekend. The weather was absolutely perfect and that sunrise was one of the most incredible experiences of our lives. It was at that moment during his set that we knew Desert Hearts was destined for greatness. It was at that moment we knew nothing could stop us.

Fast forward to our Spring Festival in 2014 and it was like reliving our first party all over again. Not only did we stand our ground against a helicopter a squadron of police SUVs, but the weather on Friday night was absolutely insane. Through the wind, rain, and snow, the peak of the extreme came during Deep Jesus’s Midnight Mass. The weather assaulted the dance floor and DJ booth as our family huddled together under whatever makeshift shelter they could find. Somehow, against all odds, the music went on. It’s with our pleasure to take you back to that eventful Friday night at Desert Hearts when we celebrated Midnight Mass with Deep Jesus.

I’ve known Marbs since we were little groms back in elementary school. I remember he was always an extremely talented artist and used to rock a “Pink is Punk” rash guard while we surfed together. Gangster status I know.  We drifted apart when we went to different high schools until hilarious circumstances brought us back together in college. My freshman year of college I fell in love with a girl who decided to take a semester off due to a family emergency. After trying to make our long-distance relationship work for a couple months, I remember how excited I was when she was finally coming back to school. I got flowers ready for her, etc and we were going to meet up at a friend’s party. So there I was, ecstatic to see my girlfriend, and she walks into the room right up to me and says, “Hi Mikey, this is my new boyfriend, Marbs.” So ya, that’s the story of how Marbs stole my freshman girlfriend hahaha.  8 years later and this girl long gone, Marbs and I still can’t believe we ended up being best friends and business partners. Love is a funny thing and that’s what Desert Hearts is all about. Hope you enjoy this beautifully dark 4am on Saturday Night mix from Marbs, Live @ Desert Hearts. Enjoy! <3

Mikey Lion Live @ Desert Hearts

Jay Tripwire was the only DJ at our Desert Hearts Spring Festival that played 2 sets throughout the weekend. We couldn't be happier about that fact. Jay's first set took place during the worst part of Friday night's freak rainstorm. Unfortunately, it was riddled with technical difficulties as we literally had to cover the DJ booth and all the Funktion-Ones with whatever tarps we could find to protect him from the elements. The next day at high noon, one of our DJs wasn't able to make his set so we knew we had to give Jay a shot at redemption. And we're so glad we did. Jay's redemption set ended up being one of the best of the weekend. So sit back, relax, and take a trip through Saturday day with Jay Tripwire - Live @ Desert Hearts.

Jon Dadon has been one of the most influential DJs and party organizers in San Diego over the last 5 years.  The Lovelife parties he started with his partner, Jimbo James, are one of the main reasons Deep House & Techno have gone through a sort of renaissance in San Diego these past couple years. Before Lovelife, the city was lost in a barrage of mainstream electro house.  It wasn't long before future Desert Hearts DJs were made residents of Lovelife and a united scene began to flourish. Jon is a long time DH veteran and has been with us since the very beginning of our family. His set on Sunday afternoon at our Spring Festival was one of the absolute highlights of the weekend and we could be more excited to present to you, Live @ Desert Hearts - Jon Dadon - 013.

Time for some Techno! We're proud to share with you Ben Seagren b2b Tara Brooks just after sunset on Sunday night at our Desert Hearts Spring Festival 2014. After a blissed out Sunday day, we knew Ben was going to throw down some dark techno to bring in night. Even though some technical difficulties kept Ben from being able to play a proper set by himself, it turned out to be a blessing in disguise as he and Tara Brooks threw down one of the most psychedelic sets of the weekend. This Thanksgiving we're thankful for Marc Houle﻿! It's our supreme pleasure to share with you this ultimate Throwback Thursday set from Marc Houle at our 1 Year Anniversary Festival. His 3 hour live techno set is still to this day one of the best sets we've ever heard in our lives. He harnessed the Desert Hearts vibe as soon as he entered the gates and then completely annihilated the dance floor like nothing we've ever seen before. This was probably the hardest we've ever danced in our lives. 

After his set when it was time to take Marc to his hotel, he thoroughly declined and said he'd rather sleep in the back of a friends car for the next two days because there was no way he was leaving Desert Hearts. Marc, you're a true Desert Hearts legend.

We owe a lot of our musical influence to our boys Yanick & Zack from Bells & Whistles. Originally hailing from Switzerland & Russia and transplanted in San Diego, these were some of the first guys that really started turning us onto true underground dance music. They opened our eyes to a whole new world of music and for that we're forever thankful. The boys eventually moved to San Francisco for the music scene, but when we finally started DH we knew we wanted to bring them on board as Resident DJs and eventually Desert Hearts Records Artists. With an incredible Bells & Whistles EP coming soon on the label, we hope you enjoy this spacey trip through Friday night at our 2 Year Anniversary Festival.

My live set from DISTRIKT camp at Burning Man. This was one of the most monumental sets of my life playing in front of 3000 people in the middle of a dust storm. This was one of those days that set the bar for the rest of my DJ career.

It's an interesting point in time where Soulection is right now.. we have all the leverage that we need going into 2015 but there is a concern... and that concern is where will the sound direction go in 2015? If you've been to our live shows, you may have noticed a lot of energy and turn up vibes but where is the balance of soul music? This is something that I try to inject and keep in rotation within the radio show. Without soul music there is no Soulection. Can't forget our roots. Your'e gonna hear a lot of classic D'Angelo, Erykah, classics, and overall just good vibes. Someone has to keep the vibe alive.

What's up Desert Hearts Family,

I'm so excited to release my set from Desert Hearts Festival 2024. This fest marked the 12th year of Desert Hearts and the dawn of a new era at our home in Flagstaff, AZ. It's been a rocky and uncertain 5 years for us since losing our venue during the pandemic, but DHF 2024 was the great reset button as we threw, in my opinion, the best and most special festival we've ever thrown. The vibe and the magic were untouchable. I might be biased, but I've always said I'd put Desert Hearts Fest up against any party in the world, and for four days, I believe we achieved that. What's scary to think about is how much better next year is going to be now that we've got our bearings under us at the new venue...

For my latest mix, I really wanted to go in a different direction from what you'd usually hear from me. With Valentine's Day and City Hearts LA coming up this Saturday, I wanted to dedicate a mix entirely to what I think is the most important thing in the world, Love. There's a reason Love is the main theme that drives our festivals and Desert Hearts​ Records. Our community has been able to open the hearts and minds of so many incredible people and our goal is to ultimately share that message of love with the rest of the world.  <3

So this mix is dedicated to all of you lovers out there. Whether you're single or in a relationship, if you have love to give I believe the universe will return that love to you. Some of these songs are new and some are old, but they've all had a profound impact on my life over the years and I wanted to put something together that really makes you feel. Part mythical desert harlequin, part modern soul conductor, Mikey Lion is more than a DJ––He’s a freak of nature and an energy controller. The San Diego-native has earned a dusty mystique over the past few years as the center of the Desert Hearts movement and as a house and techno provocateur with a stage presence that suggests he will ride this wave all the way to the top. If there's one thing Mikey does well, it's get the party started.

Lion, real name Michael Leon, has brought the mothafuckin' ruckus to the stages of Lightning in a Bottle, the dustiest storms at Burning Man, and The Do LaB at Coachella, earning nods from Claude VonStroke, Jamie Jones, and Green Velvet in the process. In doing so, Lion and his signature top hat have developed a boisterous voice in the House & Techno scene with strong tribal, hip-hop, and psychedelic elements.

But it all started with Wu-Tang and Daft Punk. Lion first found his way behind the decks as a thirteen year old kid, scratching underground hip-hop records religiously after school. At Coachella as a seventeen year old, he witnessed that legendary Daft Punk performance on the same night he tasted his first dose of psychedelics. The show had such a monumental impact on him, he gave up Hip-Hop and became a House DJ the very next day.

After honing his craft with weekly marathon DJ sessions at Sala Razzmatazz in Barcelona, Mikey was introduced to Burner culture at Lightning in a Bottle, 2011. It was at his first Burning Man in 2011 that he found a community calling and merged forces with his brother Porkchop, life long friends Marbs & Deep Jesus, and the inimitable Lee Reynolds to form The Desert Hearts Crew.

In November 2012, Desert Hearts began as a seedy, 200-person renegade gathering deep in the Mojave Desert. The intrepid crew barely survived a set of extreme weather conditions and unfortunate circumstances, but that first party sparked a fire. The entire point of that first Desert Hearts was to create as much love as humanly possible, and now that same gathering has evolved into the darling of the West Coast house and techno scene. The Bi-annual festival is capped at 3500 attendees in order to create the best possible vibe. Built upon beautiful people getting as weird as possible to deep and trippy house and techno, Desert Hearts has already achieved iconic status in the North American Festival Scene. 

Desert Hearts has given rise to a family of thousands and it's safe to call it a bonafide movement of love. And while Desert Hearts Records launched in 2014 as a totally-free record label, pushes the sonic aesthetic of the scene, the crew’s busy international calendar of bookings has the DH message spreading far and wide. At the center of it all is Mikey Lion, the dusty prince of desert hearts, a beacon of weird far and wide, and one of this generation’s most compelling agents of love.
