The stunning ‘Comprehension Of Light’ marks a sizeable step forward for Dmitry. A must-hear for fans of fellow 130701 alumni Max Richter, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Dustin O’Halloran and Hauschka, the LP is Dmitry’s first ever vinyl release and is a wonderfully conceived and realised work. Where ‘Collage’ was heavily augmented with an expansive use of electronics and virtual instrumentation, the new album sees Dmitry upgrade to real strings / orchestral instrumentation with a more limited use of software. ISKRA String Quartet (The XX, Radiohead, Jóhann Jóhannsson) contributed strings. Other contributors include William Yates (Memotone), Abul Mogard and Benoit Pîoulard. It was mixed by Addi 800 (Ólafur Arnalds) and mastered by Martyn Heyne (Nils Frahm, Peter Broderick, The National and others).

In places recalling Jóhann Jóhannsson and Hauschka, in others the work of Leyland Kirby / The Caretaker, or Eduard Artemiev's score for Tarkovsky’s ‘Stalker’, 'Comprehension' is a stunning album which traces a redemptive narrative arc and bears witness to a rising young talent in the field of modern composition.

In Hour 2 we welcome  Moscow-based Dmitry Evgrafov who began self-releasing his music at the age of seventeen. In 2015, the young pianist / composer signed to FatCat’s 130701 imprint, releasing the album ‘Collage’, followed by a seven-track EP, ‘The Quiet Observation’, a year later. A further year on, his latest release ‘Comprehension Of Light’ album marks a sizeable step forward for Dmitry, witnessing an increased maturity in his writing alongside an expanded breadth of palette and will sit comfortably alongside 130701 alumni Max Richter, Jóhann Jóhannsson, Dustin O’Halloran and Hauschka. He had this to say;
"This mixtape is an exploration of stylistic, emotional and cultural boundaries that are associated with different kinds of sounds/instruments/tonal structures. Also, it’s a journey through the music that excites me and I would like to share it with you because I think that these gems deserve to be heard by more people."

Dmitry Evgrafov - Mixtape 4

Ever since I heard the very first piece by Dmitry Evgrafov, I’ve been keeping an eye (an ear?) on this Moscow-based composer, signed to FatCat’s 130701. My attachment was rewarded, when, back in 2017, Evgrafov released Comprehension Of Light, which instantly shot up to the top of my rotation queue and inevitably ended up being one of the best albums of the year, for the appropriately titled Music For Watching The Snow Slowly Fall In The Moonlight. Take that statement for what it is and know that I’m immediately a follower and a fan, which is why I’m incredibly honoured to present to you this exclusive premiere of a track, taken off Evgrafov’s upcoming EP, titled Return.

For this short, digital-only release, Evgrafov returns to the instrument, to gift us with his delicate playing, incorporating motifs ranging from the Romantics (I swear, I hear a bit of Rachmaninoff in there) to the contemporary and modern classical interpretations of the sound, eventually endowing with his own. Closely captured keys of fluttering and fleeting beauty are finely weaved with a texture of atmospheric grandeur to slowly build and evolve into a wide-spanning composition of sentiments and senses. Digital elements and careful effects are introduced into this composition with just enough proficient drizzle, like a swift rub of an orange twist on the rim of a glass – to give the essence of the sensation, but not to overwhelm the taste.

“The Waves” is from the upcoming EP, titled Return, scheduled to be released by 130701 on September 14th, 2018, available from all of your favourite digital outlets.

Beneath Kromholm lies an old mine on the Torgorian Ridge — crystal mining began here as far back as the reign of the Drunken Emperor. For centuries the industrious dwarves developed more and more new deposits, decorated columns and banisters with exquisite carvings, erected beautiful bridges over precipices... This place was home to entire generations.

One of the indigenous inhabitants of the mines was an engineer named Hardolf Threebolt. He was a typical engineer, nothing special, except for the fact that in his youth he was once hit in the head with one of the blades of a watermill. After this unfortunate accident he began to act strangely: he would either swing his mallet at nothing, or recite poems from the Red Balcony, or refuse mugs of dark dwarven beer... in other words, he was a little queer, but harmless. Folks like Threebolt are common among the dwarves — watermills don’t forgive mistakes.

In all fairness, Hardolf still had a good head on his shoulders. He invented various useful devices, like the synchropaddletron or the steam-powered, remote-controlled lute. That’s why he was entrusted with an important task: inventing a new gadget that could comb the miners’ beards, polish their stilts, and cook their soup. The machine was supposed to bring some comfort into the harsh lives of these subterranean artisans. Threebolt hit the ground running. He locked himself up in his forge for two months and managed to finish the job by the opening of the next mine shaft.

Rather an awkward situation occurred during the presentation of the mysterious gadget: it turned out that the machine actually performed a completely different function than originally intended — it drained magical energy out of crystals. Instead of delivering his opening speech, Threebolt roared with laughter, tossed a Sapper’s Fleeting Fancy explosives kit into the audience, and, taking advantage of the general confusion, disappeared without a trace. Some people believe he’s still wandering somewhere in the mine’s tunnels. They say that, if you listen carefully, you can even discern the echo of his insane laughter.

The mad craftsman’s invention hasn’t gone anywhere. The machine, which is still capable of draining magical power out of crystals, is now sought after by all manner of rogues, mercenaries, and bounty hunters. The work in the mines has stopped, and its peaceful life is over. Now an interminable battle for the cursed mechanism rages day and night. It’s true what they say: technological advancement brings nothing but destruction and chaos!
