ESHKOUN JAY is an international DJ who has been living in Berlin for some years now. He has been manning the decks and spinning vibes since 1999. Vinyl & Cassette Enthusiast, Music Selector Founder @beatonfeet1 with an excellent collection of North African, Middle Eastern vinyls, cassettes, and multi-cultural Beats, electronic, disco, and Afro.

TALES OF LOVE AND SORROW III

Following up on the mixes 'Armenian Record Center' and 'Greek Record Center,' here's a mix of terrific music recorded from 78rpm records found in Cairo containing some of the most beautiful Egyptian instrumentals (plus some vocal tracks). There's a few classics on here by the likes of Abdel Wahab and Mohamed Shawqi but there's bound to be stuff you haven't heard before. Mezmerizing, soothing, nostalgic, innovative music from the golden age.

I've only reduced hiss mildly as I wanted to keep the original treble levels of the 78s.

Mixtapes in Egypt are referred to as "cocktails". Back in the day, Egyptians used to go to cassette shops with a list of songs and the shop used to fish out these songs and record them on a mixtape. 

Yas Queen Selectress is an Egyptian DJ based in NYC spinning North African music, from Egyptian 80's Pop to Raï and Gnawa. Mixed with a hint of modern electronic sounds, her live sets also include occasional touches of Arab Disco, House, Dub, Afrobeat and Cumbia music.
