The Puddle Jumpers delivered a very unique style of pop music and helped define what Seattle music magazines would later describe as "Progressive Folk". This band is now considered by most Seattle pop music historians to be first progressive folk group in the Pacific Northwest.

As this sub genre title suggests, the band's appealing musical style and dramatically powerful sound came from an interesting blend of roots/celtic/americana folk with the added complexity and unusual chord progressions normally associated with progressive rock of the early 70s.  British prog rock bans such as YES, ELP and Pink Floyd were major influences on all of the band members growing up, and these influences can clearly be heard in the songwriting as well as in the arrangements of The Puddle Jumpers. 

Rick Vartian's use of the Octave Mandolin as his primary songwriting tool, along with his signature Hammond Organ and minimoog synthesizer work on all of the group's 38 studio recordings helped drive home their unique approach to music production and further defined "The Puddle Jumper Sound".

The band is often compared to Jethro Tull and Kansas which are both well known for combining similar and diverse musical styles together to produce their trademark sounds.
