On The Border, from artists Tapani Rinne and Teho Majamäki, is the tenth album to be released on Signature Dark label.

Since the beginning, space and the sound of it has been one of the cornerstones of Tapani Rinne and Teho Majamäki's music. The two previous albums contain meditative music recorded in acoustically interesting and atmospheric locations - temples and caves in India, as well as deep underground in the railway tunnels of Helsinki's metropolitan area.

With the new album, the musicians wanted to keep outside factors to a minimum and record compositions in controlled studio conditions. In this way, different spaces can be created electronically afterwards into the works. Aleksi Myllykoski and Mika Kalmi are responsible for mixing and post-production. The tracks are based on Teho's metal percussion instruments and Tapani's woodwinds.

In the finished pieces, the duo went towards free musical dialogue, in which the boundaries between improvisation and composed music become blurred and insignificant. Instead of listening to the sound of the space itself, musicians tuned in to listen to the vibration of the metal and wooden instruments. ”We focused on sensing the mutual resonance of the instruments and the sensitivity of the improvisation. A presence on the border of familiar and unknown.” Says Tapani and Teho.

The recordings took place in Kitee, Eastern Finland, near the Russian border. The location and way of working gave birth to the name of the record - On The Border. Signature Dark record label was founded in May 2020 in Helsinki. The core of the label is to release dark, melancholic, minimalist and cinematic music. Genres such as ambient, drone and doom jazz are in the spotlight, but there’s always room for other material as well as long as it fits the big picture with everything starting from the experimental ground.

In terms of the creative process for this album, I wanted to develop new production techniques using only field recordings recorded in my area with modular synthesis and effects pedals while altering the sound with tape recorders in some tracks to add an even more lively, organic and random touch.

The story I wish to tell is the initiatory journey of a man of spirituality, Milarepa who learned witchcraft in his youth and who for an ancient revenge used black magic against his enemies. But driven by remorse and purified by the trials of an old sage whose disciple he asks to become, he succeeds thanks to the teachings passed on to him and to his life as a hermit, in attaining awareness. His journey has inspired many people over the centuries and hopefully continues to inspire a generation seeking mysticism and hope today.

The other little story I had fun doing with the titles of these tracks is that you can read the 6 names in a row as if they were one sentence, as a summary of the stages of this man's life and also to reinforce the fact that the album is to be listened to in the intended order as it tells a story with an established chronology forming a coherent whole.

"To rest is to allow yourself to be unfinished, but to enjoy yourself nonetheless. To accept that whatever task you have set yourself you will not achieve right at this instant, and being at peace with that. To sit down wherever you happen to stand and to see what can be enjoyed right here, never forgetting that at some point your journey will continue and carry you away from that resting place.

As someone that consciously started out on his spiritual journey a bit later in life, I’m all too familiar with the opposite of that, with always wanting to be somewhere else already and dismissing every place reached as not-yet-there. And when I wouldn’t get “there“ fast enough, I would punish myself, in feelings and deeds. Strangely enough, that didn’t seem to help very much and the more I tried to go faster the less I seemed to be moving. Eventually I was fortunate enough to meet some teachers who helped me to find a different way and one of the most important lessons I had to learn was to rest. To find self-love and compassion, in the face of the pain and challenges we all have to meet, even and especially when sometimes failing at them. To treat oneself the same way one would invite a tired friend to sit down and share water after a long day's walk.

So in this release I attempted to manifest those feelings, and to offer you a sonic space to find rest and comfort in. Hopefully whatever issue you are working on and whatever path you are treading for this half hour you can put it all aside, immersing yourself and recovering your strength to set out on your road again whenever you will be ready"

His earliest work recorded under the now-familiar Mind over MIDI moniker arrived in the early '90s.
