We invited her to play at our most recent #Sundowner003 event, where we gave our hand-picked artists the following brief prior to their sets:  

"Let go of any expected expectations from the crowd and be your absolute self musically ... challenge yourself and connect with your creative self to create a performance that is true to you and you alone."

As a result, we received some really creative and diverse curations from each of our artists.

Celebrating three years of music with our own platform in Canada! 

We got the opportunity to dig deep into the artist integrity and upbringing of Romania's Vern.

Q + A WITH @VERN-RO (JOULE, ROMANIA)

Q. What was underground club culture like for you growing up and what influences did you take from it and what's different from it now in 2020?
A. Hard question - I think every period has their beautiful parts. for example, I personally miss that sound, it wasn't sophisticated. On the other hand, I currently consider that the public is more selective. I am glad that many talented artists have appeared and that every day you can discover extraordinary pieces from people who are at the beginning of the road.

Q. What release describes your sound the most to you personally?
A. If we talked about another artist, Janeret - Tartouffe007, if we talk about my release, Levant EP.

Q. Do you have any guilty pleasures in your vinyl collection from when you were younger that you still listen to?
A. Yes, Depeche Mode - Songs of faith and devotion.

Q. Did your parents have any influence into the music you create today?
A. Not really, when I was little I heard more Romanian traditional music, that is not found in my sound.

Q. What is one thing you want to achieve in music that you haven't already?
A. In my sound I really want to bring more modular sounds in my tracks, maybe in the near future I can build a modular setup and hope after this pandemic episode ends, to play music more often at parties.

Q. Lastly, what are your hobbies when you're not writing music, listening to music, or DJing?
A. I quickly find activities depending on my condition. exercise, reading, a light movie, sleep and recently cooking.

Bread and Butter Recordings w/ Simon Sorin - Podcast 005

This month's Mindcast is being delivered by no one other than Sorin Simon! Sorin has impressed us at a private party in London and we were so excited to invite him to our podcast series!

Sorin Simon has always been attracted to music and it all started in his childhood home of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, where he took piano lessons while still in school. The passion for music only grew as the years went by and as he started to go to different festivals, Sorin decided it was time for him to become a producer. So in 2006, he got himself some musical equipment and started learning the tricks all by himself.

That same year, he started playing music at some private parties for friends. Slowly, he was learning the craft and by the time he moved in Jersey, in the Channel Islands in the UK, he was ready for the big stuff. Soon enough, he was resident at one of the top clubs in the city.

Time went by and in 2017 Sorin moved definitively to London where he started playing different clubs all around the city. A year later, he signed to Vivus Records, an underground/independent and vinyl-only label from South Germany. Sorin has played at multiple festivals both in Romania and abroad such as Monegros Festival in Spain, Back To The Wild and Electric Castle in Romania.

As a producer, Sorin Simon’s dark and trippy soundscapes are reminiscent of the Romanian underground scene and his first track, O dimineață târzie, remains an unreleased jam, that has nonetheless over 100k views on Youtube. Since then, he released two EPs – Ecouri Paralele at Other Thoughts Records and the track Fragmente on the VA03 released by Vivus Records. 

Sorin aims to give the public the same lovely feeling he has when he encounters quality music and his mesmerizing and deep microhouse does just that. His goal was never to be a people pleaser, but to please the right people.

From the very first moments of the journey, the listener finds himself immersed in a psychedelic universe, embodied by appearances of flutes, vocals or piano. This fabulous background is in stark contrast to a racy minimal with a tight groove that goes on and on.
The artist shines by his ability to create a remarkable tension with few elements and a flawless mix. We find a number of his own productions, which accentuates the homogeneity of the selection. Throughout the set, the tracks that follow one another include a panoply of hits reminiscent of Musique Concrète, as well as many organic and acoustic elements such as ride cymbals. At times, Razvan also has the ability to take you to very dark places with spooky and UFO sounds, but always remaining groovy and round.
In the end, this two-hour set is one of a kind with pure, seamless esthetics and a very mature storytelling.
