Pat Bosman & Jarvi - NBFC NYE 2015

Coming up in the southern French city of Montpellier, Yamen & EDA started out on their path towards being the credible DJs they are today by being dropped off at the city's day parties by their parents. As a result of this unlikely, but welcome scenario they became close friends as adolescents and found a true affinity working together. That relationship spilled over into the studio where the pair began to experiment and make their own music which blossomed into their debut release for Safari Numerique in 2012. In more recent years the pair have been supported by Adam Shelton and Subb-an's One Records camp with whom they now firmly form, part of the family. 

With One Records having long been regulars in our basement space, their upcoming takeover of Room Two this Saturday has offered Yamen and EDA their first opportunity to come to Farringdon and play so, we hooked up, found out a little bit more about their story and jacked in to their audio aesthetic in this exclusively prepared mixtape.

Anyone who has been following this series knows that we have Chicago based artists littered throughout. A year ago, we hosted four mixes throughout the month of April from local DJs. Very happy to share an extended session from a true spirit in this community. I have had the pleasure of seeing Jarvi a couple times, in addition to sharing numerous dancefloor high fives. This mix is deep, meditative, thoughtfully constructed, and a true treat. Headphones recommended. Enjoy!

bio: 

Jarvi is a fresh face to the Chicago house & techno scene. Hailing from Metro Detroit, she was introduced to the music at a young age. DJing has always been a dream and in 2013 with the help of mentor, Sassmouth, that dream became a reality. She is also a member of Chicago's Naughty Bad Fun Collective, a Resident at Smart Bar for Planet Chicago (along with Sassmouth & Pat Bosman), and can be found on the dance floor jacking to proper beats. The fresh prints of a large cat's paw could be distinctly seen on the muddy path. When we had passed here before, there had been no tracks on the path. I remembered that very well. The tracks pointed towards us—clearly the animal had been following on our heels.

Grounding Meditation

For all its reputation as an rave and EDM capital, Los Angeles never had anything resembling a techno scene until Drumcell and his Droid Behavior posse started throwing event in the early 2000s. For 16 years, the LA-born producer Moe Espinosa and his partners Vidal and Vangelis Vargas (who produce techno as Raíz) made bringing techno to Tinsel Town their life's mission. And it worked, with LA now hosting multiple techno events every weekend, while the Droid Behavior crew tour their brand of decidedly non-West Coast sounding techno around the world.
Espinosa sat down with Rave Curious at the Vice studios by the beach in Venice, over an hour's drive from his end of East Los Angeles, to talk about what it took to build a scene from scratch, about this inspiration he took from Detroit and Chicago, and about the endless flights back and forth to Europe while keeping what he built at home alive.

I’ve been sitting on this edit for quite a while. Occasionally I made adjustments in the arrangement, but never felt like it was finished until recently. This was a challenging one to say the least, and I finally wrapped it up a couple of weeks ago. This was possibly serendipitous, but the intention was to be a tribute to Herb Kent, a living legend, who gave us so many great Sunday mornings in Chicago. This edit is of "The Kool Gent" by The Olympic Runners, which was inspired by Herb’s famous moniker.
