Invictus

By 1940, the resistance had evolved. No longer just scattered guerillas in the mountains, Libyans formed the Libyan Arab Force (aka Cyrenaica Defence Force) to fight alongside the Allies in World War II. This track captures the heavy, disciplined march of that army as they fought to liberate their homeland from Fascism.

The lyrics are adapted from the famous poem "The Soldier in the Battlefield" (Al-Jundi fi Maydan al-Qital) by Ibrahim Al-Usta Umar. Unlike many poets who wrote from safety, Al-Usta was a soldier in the trenches of Tobruk. He wrote these words while facing enemy fire, living the reality of "Victory or Death."

Historical Note: The lyric "A cloak of ice " is not a metaphor - it is a literal translation of Al-Usta's verse. While often imagined as blazing hot, the Libyan desert drops to dangerously freezing temperatures at night, a brutal reality for the soldiers shivering in foxholes during the Siege of Tobruk.
