토모이쿠 고등학교의 경제 수업은 항상 도전적인 과제를 내기로 유명했고, 그날도 예외는 아니었다. 다음 페어 테스트 과제가 발표되자, 쌍둥이의 얼굴에는 기대감이 번졌다. 과제의 주제는 매우 거대했다.
“만약 화폐가 존재하지 않는다면, 세계 경제를 어떻게 재구성할 것인가?”

도서관에서…

“경제 구조를 완전히 바꾸려면, 먼저 전 세계의 교환 기준을 통일하고 가치 교환 방식을 단순화해야 해.”

“그렇다면 가치 교환을 디지털화하는 건 어때? 모든 재화와 서비스에 ‘에너지’라는 형태의 가치를 부여하는 시스템을 만드는 거야. 디지털 화폐 같은 방식으로.”

카논과 하루토는 아이디어를 계속 확장해 나갔다. 그들이 구상한 새로운 시스템은 **‘에너지 화폐(Energy Currency)’**로, 재화와 서비스의 가치를 시간, 노력, 지식, 환경 기여도 같은 ‘에너지 단위’로 측정하는 방식이었다. 이 시스템은 각국의 환율에 의존하지 않고 직접적으로 가치를 측정할 수 있다는 점에서 혁신적이었다.

“에너지 화폐라면 국가 간 환율 차이도, 빈부 격차도 사라질 거야. 전 세계 모든 사람이 자신의 시간과 노력을 통해 에너지를 만들어내고, 그 에너지로 필요한 것을 얻을 수 있게 되는 거지.”

하루토는 화이트보드에 **“Energy = Value”**라고 적으며 설명을 이어갔다.
“그리고 이 시스템은 전 세계 디지털 네트워크로 연결돼서, 개별 에너지 단위가 즉시 거래될 수 있어. 환경 영향이나 사회적 기여도를 평가하는 알고리즘을 넣으면 지속 가능한 사회도 만들 수 있고.”

그리고 발표 시간이 찾아왔다.

“저희는 기존 화폐를 없애고, 그 대신 **‘에너지 화폐’**를 도입할 것을 제안합니다. 이 시스템에서는 전 세계가 공통 기준으로 재화와 서비스의 가치를 측정할 수 있게 됩니다.
에너지 화폐는 시간, 노력, 지식, 기여도 같은 추상적 가치를 화폐 대신 측정합니다. 사람들은 자신이 만들어낸 에너지를 사용해 물건을 교환할 수 있습니다.”

발표가 끝나자 교실은 조용해졌다. 교수들은 진지한 표정으로 입을 열었다.

“매우 흥미로운 제안입니다. 이 에너지 화폐가 실제로 정착된다면, 국경과 빈부 격차를 넘어 모든 사람에게 평등한 가치 교환의 기회를 제공할 수 있을 것입니다.”

또 다른 교수가 말을 이었다.
“하지만 현실적으로는 가치 계산 방식과 에너지 측정 기준을 전 세계적으로 통일하는 것이 매우 어렵습니다. 그러나 그 장벽을 넘을 수 있다면, 화폐를 없애는 것이 새로운 경제 시스템을 탄생시킬 가능성은 충분합니다.”

테스트가 끝나고 쌍둥이가 교실을 나서며 서로 미소를 지었다.

“뭐, 아직 해결해야 할 과제는 많지만… 그래도 해볼 만한 가치가 있었어.”

“응. 그리고 정말 이런 시스템이 실현된다면, 세계는 더 평등해지고 경제도 변할지 몰라. 미래는 분명 그런 방향으로 움직일 거야. 우리의 아이디어가 그 첫걸음이 되면 좋겠다.”
