Over the past few years, Leeds-based producer and DJ Oscar Jones has been in the studio developing and refining his sound, blending influences from the Romanian and UK minimal scenes which can be heard in his latest releases with Tranquil, Duboka and Below Records. Oscar has also proven himself as a competent DJ and avid digger, bringing his unique selections of stripped-back rolling minimal to support the likes of Traumer, Jasper James and Laidlaw.

For our 30th edition, we have a special own production mix by the talented Alex Ungureanu. We are happy to have him back after he served us an incredible 4-track EP in February (IMP004). He did not sit still this year and made a collaboration track with Hipp on the vinyl label Kontent. Besides he has released on Capucine Records and it will not be his last release of the year. Keep an eye out! 

Alex presents us with a 1-hour set filled with solely his own productions. It gives us a good projection of what he has been working on. He used unreleased as well as released bits, in order to make a smooth set. Expect deep and dark sounds, dreamy elements and rollin grooves, all made on the Alex Ungureanu way. Enjoy this masterpiece!

Implicit Mind Cast 030: Alex Ungureanu (Own Productions)

For the 18th instalment, Schmaus is happy to welcome an up-and-coming DJ from Timișoara (Romania): Venter. As a freelance DJ, he started mixing in 2018 after meeting with a friend at a party. Curious by nature, it didn’t take long for him to jump on and mix his own tracks. He always does things by heart and never stop until satisfied.
A few words from the artist: “In music, as in every art process, you find and lose yourself at the same time.” Stay tuned for his performance available 15th October on Schmaus.

Venter opens his performance with glitches and percussive elements, on a background of light. The listener encounters delicious abstract vocoder phrases while a high intensity arp lead is coming in. Distorted vocals and minimal blips intertwist with furtive, atonal dissonant chords.
Then the mood switches to a super groovy and funky vocal bomb in the manner of Dragutesku. As if it were a mirage, the funky vibe gives place to a more abstract piece that evolves into a driving bass line and lead, topped with new wave vocals that surely remind of Depeche Mode.
The artists oscillate between housy sunny moments and dark driving pieces, acid drives and uplifting pads, always with a layer of vocal details. This results in a refreshing tribute to Romanian minimal while bringing an asserted identity.
In the end, this eclectic performance demonstrates a strong passion coming from a promising young artist.

Schmaus 018 - Venter

Nicolae, who was born and raised in Constanta, Romania, began his musical career around 2017. He began by producing techno tunes, taking inspiration from Umek. As he attended local events in his hometown, his music preference evolved to minimal house, which he fell in love with. His major objective is to meet new people, make them dance, and learn about their lives.

Sorin Simon has always been attracted to music and it all started in his childhood home of Cluj-Napoca, Romania, where he took piano lessons while still in school. The passion for music only grew as the years went by and as he started to go to different festivals, Sorin decided it was time for him to become a Dj.
So, in 2006, he got himself some musical equipment and started learning the tricks all by himself and inspired by a:rpia:r crew at that time.
That same year, he started playing music at some private parties for friends and small crowds. Slowly, he was learning the craft and by the time he moved in Jersey, in the Channel Islands in the UK, he was ready for the big stuff. Soon enough, he was resident at one of the top clubs in the city.
Time went by and in 2017 Sorin moved definitively to London where he started playing different underground events all around London. A year later, he signed to Vivus Records, an underground/independent and vinyl-only label from South Germany. Sorin has played at multiple festivals both in Romania and abroad such as Monegros Desert Festival, Sonar Off in Spain, Back To The Wild and Electric Castle in Romania.
As a producer, Sorin Simon’s dark and trippy soundscapes are reminiscent of the Romanian underground scene and his first track, O dimineață târzie, remains an unreleased jam, that has nonetheless over 150k views on YouTube. Since then, he released two EPs – Ecouri Paralele at Other Thoughts Records and the track Fragmente on the VA03 released by Vivus Records.
Sharing the decks with some well-known Dj’s like Janeret,Crihan,Cap,Mihigh, RQZ,Cosmjn,Illan Nicciani,Triptil,Bryz,Bexu,Little Hado,Prajescu,Maher Daniel just to name few of them.
Sorin aims to give the public the same lovely feeling he has when he encounters quality music and his mesmerizing and deep-dark minimal microhouse does just that. His goal was never to be a people pleaser, but to please the right people.

For our 69th edition to the podcast series we bring you local DJ LiamG, he's been a regular to our parties and really is a top gent. Born in the Midlands UK, performing for some of the many events and clubs in Digbeth has shaped diverse track selections contributing to a signature sound. Liam naturally builds a journey in his sets often experimenting with multiple sub-genres, drum patterns and energy levels. His mix for the Dubøka Podcast demonstrates his affinity with the more deeper, subtle and emotive tracks.
