The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show broadcast on BBC Radio 1 and features many styles of electronic dance music. It was originally the brainchild of Eddie Gordon, the producer of the show from the first broadcast in 1993 to 2001. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule. It is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.

This Essential Mix is from the Plump DJs recorded back in 2003.

Here's my 4 hour live set recording from my 25 years of DJing celebration party in London on 2nd May 2014. My goal was to take everyone on a journey through my favourite years and genres of proper Old Skool Rave music which is what I am best known for.

When one refers to an artist as ‘an absolute legend’, ‘Godfather’ or ‘international hero’; more often than not it can be a term applied by the support of loving fans Worldwide or in some cases media hype that pertains to the artist in question being somewhat exceptional in their chosen skill on a global level. ‘Godfather’ as many of those that have witnessed Francis Ford Coppola’s award winning cinematic trilogy of films of the same name will attest, can also refer to a Sicilian Crime Family Boss. Now, whilst the DJ and Producer and all round ‘international legend’ known as ‘Slipmatt’ has no affiliations with Sicilian families or crime (thankfully), he is most definitely in this case one deserving of the titles ‘Godfather’ and ‘Boss’. Here’s the exception to the rule though, he did not give himself these names, these accolades were not created off the back of some 90’s hype campaign, the name Godfather – in reference to the ‘Godfather Of Rave’ is a name he has worked very hard for nearly three decades to earn, and earn it he most definitely has.

Slipmatt - Minirig Mixtape

Here's a mix dedicated to my first ever live experience of Rave culture when I went to see DJ Carl Cox play at Obsession in Wormlow, Herefordshire in early 1992. That night was also my first ever experience with a small Red & Yellow capsule nicknamed 'Rhubarb & Custard'.... ;)

That was one hell of a game changing night for me, with tune after tune of old school piano, rave and Techno all blended together in a way only Carl Cox can. Pretty much from that moment on I've been addicted to collecting and mixing 12 inches of black plastic together, lost in my own little world of this thing called house!

As with all my DJ mixes, this was recorded on two Technics 1210's.
