The Nautilus Project - Suburban Areas

In 2018 I had the pleasure of visiting friends on the Isle of Man. The vacation on this island left a deep impression. I am still fascinated by the atmosphere that is inherent in this island and its natural surroundings. On the island there is a background atmosphere that cannot be put into words and that can be felt all the time, something very unique and rustic, mystical, and definitely Celtic. It penetrates through everything and is everywhere, it shows itself in nature, culture and buildings, the environment, and the weather and light. It's like a little world of its own.

According to legend, the Isle of Man (Isle of Man or Mannin) is protected by the Celtic god Manannan, and in times of danger he puts a wall of fog around the island to hide it from attackers, ships or unwanted visitors. The mist takes the form of a thick gray sheet of gray-violet colors that slowly envelops the land until Manannan is sure to raise his cloak again after the unwanted visitors have gone.

I am still very fascinated by it today, and the very own atmosphere of the island still has a firm grip on me, even if the visit was already 3 years ago. I long to go back there. It's like a Celtic spell, a sorcery or voice in my mind that says like I belong there.

That made me yesterday to take up a spontaneous improvisation. In the end, it is always those sudden and quickly inserted recordings that deliver the most beautiful results because they arise quickly and without thinking and free from constraints and too many thoughts. The field recording with the waves of the sea also comes from me, recorded at the southernmost point of the island, the Calf of Man (Calf Sound or The Sound).

For me, this recording hit the nail on the head, especially with the Celtic-looking synthesizer sound and the reverb effect, together with the sound of the sea, which gives a bit of the feeling of distance and looking into the past, as if through a time window . The full piece takes about 7 minutes, and will be released later.

For Samuel Evans, or Rain Dog, creating this album was a vast experiment to combine different attempts of blending more traditional elements of song writing and composition with the more contemporary influences of modern electronic dance and bass music, all within the confines of his computer and chair...

Being compelled by melody and variation, Rain Dog, by his own admission, never had much talent for songwriting in terms of lyrics. To circumvent this, however, he focuses on creating a narrative within the music through the combination of synth work and samples. He starts with anything that sparks an interest or emotion in him - Tom Waits, Joni Mitchel, Ella Fitzgerald, Portico Quartet and moments from movies, samples like these usually work as a foundation for the tracks. He then adds layers of unique and organic synth sounds (a notion he finds quite interesting when working entirely from a digital platform) before eventually completing the production with the beat. He likes his music like a nice pie - warm, hearty, and crusty.

With the 10th release of our colored vinyl series we bring you the Decade Dubs. Bristol based new artist El Choop opens the edition with pulsating chords and synths in his track Unknown Landscape. Italian producer Hydergine takes you on a psychedelic mind trip with his energetic deep techno track Blue State Of Mind.

The flip side starts with Etui Records label head Insect O. With his dirty chords and wired echoes he is telling you the mystic story about the Ancient Architects. And finally Monomood returns to the label and proves his musically diversity. A mellow brass and a deep bass will give you goosebumps while dancing on the afterhour or just sitting in a smokey jazz bar.

The artwork is done by graphic designer and musician Daniel Madlung aka Dandytracks. It´s based on a photo of the Sea of Sand at Indonesia´s Mt. Bromo volcano, taken by Insect O.
