Yesterday I met up with Emily Minnie Jacques to record a cover of the 90's classic 'Stay' by 'Shakespears Sister'.
I made an arrangement to suit Minnie's beautiful style that she has and I also asked Danny Poulton to sing the middle part of the song that the woman who used to scare me sang!

Something a bit different!

This husband and wife team release their first collaboration.
An age old scenario played out here. We've all experienced it to some extend perhaps? 
Joe and his wife Helen Meissner turned her hand to song creation during lockdown and decided not to be limited by genres. They wanted to stick to the 'balladeer' style with which Joe is associated while letting Joe free to take the song where he needed to in terms of lyrics and delivery. 
Like Karl Jenkins' Adiemus, Joe's operatic style singing is in a made up language... (in case you were wondering).

'Having recorded covers over the last two years, this was a complete revelation for me, to sing a song as it came naturally. Having your wife as producer is helpful as she let me 'play' with what just flowed out of me. We didn't have to worry about studio time/costs and other agendas. It's all an experiment in a sense. Would we be able to co create something which others might find palatable? let alone the fact that neither of us have ever written song (or desired to) make music of our own and Helen had never been behind a mixing desk or recorded anyone before!
The fact that some people have already commented favourably is a real thrill to us. 
The song is quite unusual, because I was free of constraints of expectations from the listener (this is not the case with covers!)
We didn't have any words for the pre chorus and I just started singing these meaningless words and pretending I was in front of thousands of people in an opera! (something which will remain a pretence by the looks of things, for some while to come!). I was not expecting Helen to use this aspect of the song and was resisting it's inclusion until I heard the finished track, and I have to say, I love it! The whistling in the middle 8 was just random and spontaneous too. It was the only take I did of the whistling and again was not expecting it to make the final cut. I was just killing time before singing the last chorus!'
We are encouraged by the reaction to this and are excited to be developing some more tracks which we've created entirely ourselves.

Minnie Birch is a folk pop artist from Hertfordshire UK. She was BBC Radio 1s introducing artist of the week, Buzzfeed's "one to watch" and received awards and critical acclaim in national press for her original compositions on life, love, loss and fairytale. 

She released a Sunday Times Top 100 record of the year with a unique album based on songs heard on the football terraces.  Minnie has toured extensively across the UK, Europe and across Nashville USA. 

An intriguing and unusual artist, Minnie was forced to take a career break when she was diagnosed with a rare cancer, a diagnosis which turned her world on its head and also effected the mobility in her right harm. Minnie struggled through extensive physio to get back to playing her piano and guitar. 

Her new songs are a testament to the hope and the love you can find in your darkest hours. She is looking forward to sharing them with you. Prepare to have your heart put in a soft spin, wrung out, hung out to dry and handed back to you ready to wear to the party again.
