For the morse code I used SuperCollider to generate it. Dash is pink noise with a "square" envelope which is varied between 0.03 and 0.07secs long, dot is a very short sine envelope. The spacing between each sound has a varied length to give it some movement, there are general minimum times.

This was then moved in Ableton Live mixed and the other sounds added.

This week’s project is a sound journal, an audio history of the past year. You will select a different audio element to represent each of the past 12 months of 2012. You will then select one five-second segment from each of these audio elements. Then you will stitch these dozen five-second segments together in chronological order to form one single one-minute track. There should be no overlap or gap between segments; they should simply proceed from one to the next.

These audio elements will most likely be of music that you have yourself composed and recorded, but they might also consist of phone messages, field recordings, or other source material. These items should be somehow personal in nature, suitable to the autobiographical intention of the project; they should preferably of your own making, and not drawn from third-party sources.

10 - October - 5 seconds of me honking my horn at some dipshit who pulled in front of me and just about caused an accident.  It was captured via a voicemail I was leaving a friend.  I was driving, but I had my earbuds w/microphone on so I was hands-free.  I was approaching an intersection where I had a green light but a driver did a right-on-red into my lane without checking to see if there was any approaching traffic.

11 - November - 5 seconds of a field recording I captured at work of numerous people operating automatic staplers.  I work in a rather large complex of two buildings, although my work space is at a considerable distance from the warehouse-like area.  It's an excellent random rhythm.

Mark Rushton 2012 (disquiet0051-audiojournal)

When on the 31st of December 2011, my http://soundcloud.com/seventyseconds  (a 10-seconds-a-day audio diary for the prime year 2011) came to its natural conclusion, I had so gotten used (or maybe 'addicted' is the better word) to the ritual of 'daily diary recording', that I set up a Tumblr for the year 2012, where I uploaded a daily 'diary sound file'  (rough 'n' dirty, most recordings were done with my iPhone's dictaphone app) and a related (Instagram) picture every day of the year (http://audiodiary2012.tumblr.com/ - if you go through the lot, you will see that some days seem to be missing, but that's because these are set to 'private'). 

For this contribution to the 51st Disquiet Junto, for each of 2012's 12 months I picked one of my 2012 daily sound diary files, and lifted five seconds of sound from that file. Below are short descriptions for each of the twelve 5 seconds, and a link to the original diary file:

I'll be adding more complete credits here when I get a chance this weekend, but for now:

Jan: live recording of theater piece "We're All For The Underground", with Hillary Blake Firestone and Anat Spiegel, probably recorded in Rotterdam. This five-second excerpt is a Swan Lake/Joanna Newsom mashup leading into a version of Bjork's "All is Full of Love" for synth and tiny amp feedback. 

Feb: me solo at home, a feedback study using a BugBrand Audioweevil.

Mar: me solo at home, another feedback study using the Audioweevil and a Roland SP-404 sampler.

Apr: me solo multi-tracked at home, guitar with a homemade superball mallet.

May: Sleep Gunner live with the Rosa Ensemble in Utrecht on an unforgettably hot day, no A/C, no breeze, just sweat. this excerpt is a transition between a Rosa piece called "Tallahassee" (I think) and the Louvin Brothers' "Lorene". Sleep gunner is Mark Morse-gtr, Jeroen Kimman-gtr. Rosa Ensemble is Daniel Cross - percussion, electronics; Wilbert Bulsink - piano; Peter Jessen - double bass; Ainhoa Miranda Gimenez - clarinet; Jeroen Kimman - electric guitar.

June: Light Metal Trio live improv gig at OT301, Amsterdam, my first time playing tabletop guitar in this group. Dirk Bruinsma-baritone sax, Santiago Botero-bass, Mark Morse-gtr.

July: Super Hardon Collider in Studio Jottem in Wormerweer, a very rainy day in the middle of nowhere. This was our second time playing together, everything improvised. We accidentally spent all of our money on the beer vending machine in the studio and then had to borrow money for, ahem, more beer from Andy Moor who was miraculously in the neighborhood for an equally miraculous King Ayisoba show. August: me solo at home on another unbelievably hot day in Amsterdam experimenting with dobro and Audiomulch with the windows open.

Oct: from a DJ gig at OT301, supporting Knalpot and Jozef Dumoulin Trio, this is my remix of Traxman vs Anthony Braxton.

Nov: Excerpt from live improv gig @ Zaal100, Amsterdam. Mark Morse-guitar, Mikael Szafirowski-gtr, Ig Henneman-viola, Anne La Berge - flutes, Alan Gunga Purves-percussion

Dec: this is Jeroen's rough pedal steel track that I should be using at this very moment (instead of doing this audiojournal!) as a reference to develop a guitar accompaniment before Sunday, when we record it live on camera (UPDATE: here's the result: https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=SKJERI8PZ10)

12 x 5 = 2012 [disquiet051-audiojournal].

I dumped all of the my soundcloud recordings from the past year into a bucket, and pulled out 12 of them at random, cross-fading 5 seconds from each to form a 60 second audio journal of my past year of music making.  I only did one take. This is what was produced.

I found this one really hard and have struggled with it, but here it is.

Method: 
1. End of the cat in the ocean, which went into SuperCollider, this code cuts it up and replays it in a random order with different samples left and right.

2. The intro of broken robots, this went straight into Ableton live and was messed up in there.

3. A 2.17 second sample from broken robot, this went into SuperCollider and I used code to cut it up into micro-sounds and to also generate the beat track.

All this went into Ableton where is was arranged and fx's applied.

Question: What if I cut Re into 3 second sections, let the software re-sequence the sections into a new order, shape with a sine envelope and put through a reverb and delay effect (with varying delay time and amount)?

With this one I wanted to create not just a rhythm track but have some texture in it, I used only Ableton Live and its built in effects.

Sound was recorded with a contact mic.
