“Divergence” explores the tension between space and sound induced by their manipulated representation: sounds alter, calibrate and form space while simultaneously the sound is formed and manipulated by the space it is placed in. The album is based on pure sound sources such as sine waves and white noise. These sounds are physically manipulated and destroyed by the use of tape in order to form pulses, interferences and new wave forms. These manipulations create a divergence between the perception of sound and space: real and digital space interacting with pure and altered sound sources. The result is an intense sensory reaction and heightened spatial awareness through four movements.

After her appearance on the 130701 anniversary compilation alongside Hauschka and Max Richter, Warsaw based cellist/ composer Karolina Rec is releasing her debut album with the label shortly under the moniker Resina. Re-imagining the folk music from her Polish roots, the eponymous release is also determined by her love of landscapes and nature. Incorporating more instrumental-sounding components, the record moves through both fluid and dissonant sounds which take on different structural and sculptural challenges through carefully-layered compositions.

Präsens Editionen present 'Noméri – Tere', the latest release from Lumisokea’s Andrea Taeggi (aka Gondwana). This latest release is the culmination of a six-months period of research. Including residencies (at EMS Stockholm among others), recordings and composition carried out throughout 2017. The word ‘research’ is apt here because Taeggi, and Lumisokea’s work more broadly with Koenraad Ecker, takes an holistic approach to sound. Their pieces are almost like essays on the metaphysics of music, exploring the possibilities of electronic and acoustic sound design.

When we spoke to Taeggi last year, we talked about his fascination with tunings, and specifically La Monte Young’s The Well-Tuned Piano. “His [La Monte Young’s] ability”, Taeggi told us, “to make complex music from simple elements, which sound special in and of themselves, is something which inspired in me a general fascination with minimalism.” This new release seems to tap into this idea, toying with synths that sound ever so slightly bent out of shape. There are also some exuberant polyrhythms on this record, as well as the extraordinary production trickery that one would expect.

Premiere: Andrea Taeggi - Stomata Speech [Präsens Editionen]

The music on this record was made using a vast array of rare analog machines Andrea had the chance to work on at the Willem-Twee synthesis studio in Holland (built with the iconic Studio di Fonologia RAI as a blueprint). Most of the percussive sounds come from an Analog Computer, which has been rarely used only as a music instrument (its main purpose was flight simulation). In fact, during the Cold War times it was also used as measurement tool by civil engineers and even by the army. 
To my knowledge, very few artists have given a new context to the such device, which I have found absolutely unique-sounding and gave me enough inspiration to compose a whole new album focused on it. 

At present, no one has ever officially released music recorded at the Willem-Twee synthesis studio.

The music on this record further explores cyclical, minimal and hypnotic concoctions – a particular  investigation focused on unusual rhythms that Andrea had already started on his well-received ‘Mama Matrix Most Mysterious’, released on Type in 2015. Think walls of subfrequencies, snappy rollercoasters of the mind, labyrinths in hyperspace & snakes eating their own tails.

Zimní Král means “Winter King” in Czech and was the epithet given to Frederick V Elector Palatine (king of Bohemia), the last of a legacy to actively support alchemy as a means of studying reality, the self and their inter-reflections.

Disquiet Junto Project 0050: -.......--.-..-...-

For the morse code I used SuperCollider to generate it. Dash is pink noise with a "square" envelope which is varied between 0.03 and 0.07secs long, dot is a very short sine envelope. The spacing between each sound has a varied length to give it some movement, there are general minimum times.

This was then moved in Ableton Live mixed and the other sounds added.

I found this one really hard and have struggled with it, but here it is.

Method: 
1. End of the cat in the ocean, which went into SuperCollider, this code cuts it up and replays it in a random order with different samples left and right.

2. The intro of broken robots, this went straight into Ableton live and was messed up in there.

3. A 2.17 second sample from broken robot, this went into SuperCollider and I used code to cut it up into micro-sounds and to also generate the beat track.

All this went into Ableton where is was arranged and fx's applied.

I have a fascination at the moment with clicks, pops and noise. Which I am using in my own work, so I wanted to add these elements to this track as I would do with one of my own compositions. The original material did make me thick of drifting in space and I wanted to add elements of signals drifting in and out as you move around.  All the sounds were generated in SuperCollider in some way, manly live coding and testing out some new code I have written on a sample of my work PC recorded using a coil pick up mic, this was then all stitched together in Ableton Live. I went to the Ryoli Ikeda concert at the Barbican (London) on Thursday so I wanted to play with an element of what I heard and saw.
