For the morse code I used SuperCollider to generate it. Dash is pink noise with a "square" envelope which is varied between 0.03 and 0.07secs long, dot is a very short sine envelope. The spacing between each sound has a varied length to give it some movement, there are general minimum times.

This was then moved in Ableton Live mixed and the other sounds added.

I found this one really hard and have struggled with it, but here it is.

Method: 
1. End of the cat in the ocean, which went into SuperCollider, this code cuts it up and replays it in a random order with different samples left and right.

2. The intro of broken robots, this went straight into Ableton live and was messed up in there.

3. A 2.17 second sample from broken robot, this went into SuperCollider and I used code to cut it up into micro-sounds and to also generate the beat track.

All this went into Ableton where is was arranged and fx's applied.

Question: What if I cut Re into 3 second sections, let the software re-sequence the sections into a new order, shape with a sine envelope and put through a reverb and delay effect (with varying delay time and amount)?

Description of this weeks assignment: This week's project requires you to make a field recording to serve as the source audio. These are the steps:

Step 1: Locate a clock that has an audible, even if very quiet, tick to its second hand. A watch or other timepiece is also appropriate to the task.

Step 2: Record the sound of the clock for at least 30 seconds, and do so in a manner captures the sound in the greatest detail. A contact mic is highly recommended.

Step 3: Adjust and otherwise filter the recording to reveal the various noises that make up its tick. The goal is to get at the nuance of its internal mechanism.

Step 4: Create an original piece of music employing only layered loops of that sound. These layered loops can individually be transformed in any manner you choose, but at least one unaltered version of the original recording should be included in your piece.

My Process: I took a recording of my kitchen clock using the built in mics of my DR-40.  I then imported the recording into renoise and cut 3 samples, an 8 second loop, a tick and a tock.  I synced the track to the actual rhythm of the clock and tried to use the uncut loop as much as possible.  By layering copies of the loop running at different pitches I was able to create many interesting rhythmic and melodic sequences.  By running the loop fast enough it would achieve a tone.  I then filled in the rest of the rhythm using the individual tick and tock samples.  The track makes heavy use of noise gates to try to cut down on room noise and very light use of other effects.

Half Past Nothing [disquiet0056-matteroftime]

A somewhat disturbed woodpecker decides that it can control the flow of time itself. It takes a little over two and a half minutes, but it does eventually manage to summon the original once-per-second tick sample.

Found a battery-powered mantle clock in the house that had a discernable tick. I have no contact/piezo mics handy, so put the clock on a stool and recorded with an SM57 running through an RP355 guitar pedal with all the effects/amps turned off (easiest way to sample the tick).

Loaded into Audacity. Did one stage of minimal noise filtering to get rid of some hiss. Then generated eight basic variants of the initial tick. From there on it's Ableton Live.

Ways of knowing [disquiet0056-matteroftime]

Hmm I started Friday morning thinking and trying different approaches - recording my alarm clock with accelerometers and piezo contact microphones...tried using a deflection coil to hear what was going on electromagnetic wise...tried out a bunch of plugins and granular sampling...nothing did it for me...actually uploaded a track half an hour ago, but then it came to me: Steve Reich's It´s Gonna Rain - here goes: two track of the same recording playing at slightly different speed one hard right one hard left...Starting at the same tick then separating ever so slightly to finally come back together - I left the hiss from my Edirol recorder which I placed inside my neighbors wind up clock.

Disquiet0056-matteroftime- it's gonna tick

With this one I wanted to create not just a rhythm track but have some texture in it, I used only Ableton Live and its built in effects.

Sound was recorded with a contact mic.
