Disquiet Junto Project 0118: That Ringing Sound

Junto Disquiet

“What is the room tone of the Internet?”

For this Junto, I envisioned being inside a CAT5 wire, with an 8P8C connector on the end, picking up a signal from somewhere to sending it to another place.  It's soundproof, because it's shielded, so there's no additional "real" room noise.  

The presence inside that CAT5 wire has to have a sound, and so here's what I think it is.

The recording is such that it can be listened to at different levels.  My suggestion for optimal listening would be a quiet place with very little actual "room noise".  Nice headphones.  And about 35% to 40% up on the volume.  I'll admit that it's still pretty quiet.  You can turn it up to 100% and hear it a bit better, but I would say that's too loud for what I'm doing here.  You also may feel more comfortable backing you sound down to an almost inaudible level.

To come up with this sound I made some recordings near the fan output of my aging laptop with a Zoom H1.  That was fed into Sound Forge, volume cut back probably 90%, and then a 15 second section copied to a new file.  15 seconds is fed into Paulstretch at 8x, and some tweaking in the Process tab but not much.  Render file.  Back to Sound Forge for length correction and pointless experimentation with fx.

It seems to me like the room tone inside that CAT5 would be a constant stream with minor variation.  A traveling sound.  Maybe kind of like disquiet0089-vger.  Hear mine of that:  http://markrushton.com/my-fickle-friend-the-solar-wind-disquiet0089-vger/

Awoke at six in the morning today - way too early! I live right in the center of Munich, and usually it’s pretty noisy, but today the birds were chirping in my concrete backyard. Took my field recorder and sampled it. Added a drone and a light melody in Reaktor. 

Why? Because the internet is a great place to sing your song. 

Composing, arranging and mixing took 1 hour. Thanks for listening!

Chatter [disquiet0118-internetroomtone]

Even though I, as last week, still should be writing my paper, I wanted to post a sound for this weeks assignment. And this time it didn't take long…after reading Marc's email I took my dogs for a walk and was thinking, among other things, about the project for this week. I came to think of an electromagnetic recording of the server room I did  while ago at the music conservatory, where I study for my degree. It was done with a homemade coil pick up and a handheld recorder - walking around in the server room listening to all the different hardware. The original recording was +7 minute so I bend the rules a little by editing it to about 2 minutes.

This started as one thing and ended as another, much like that odd little amphibian that crawled out of the primeval ocean.

I can’t think of a single invention, except perhaps the ‘nuclear device’, that has caused more paranoia, angst, division and discussion than the Internet.

The concept took me back to me filmmaking days. Always let the sound recordist get a few minutes of room tone, ‘atmos’ or location ambience. 

Basic track – the noise produced by “recording” the sound of my computer with Firefox open. A symbolic 2 minute blast of static, “tuned” somewhat with oscillator and delay, then repeated and further processed by being faded up from nothing over 2 minutes and  pitch dropped by 1 octave. Twice.

The rest is selected and random chunks of discussion from various discussion panels on Internet Privacy, featuring Edward Snowden. (And a nice drone made from a random word). All culled from the Internet, of course…

I used live coding in SuperCollider to make the sound files and then I load these in to Ableton and added effects/modified the sounds. I recorded a long take which was edited down to two minutes in Reaper.

Disquiet Junto Project 0050: -.......--.-..-...-

For the morse code I used SuperCollider to generate it. Dash is pink noise with a "square" envelope which is varied between 0.03 and 0.07secs long, dot is a very short sine envelope. The spacing between each sound has a varied length to give it some movement, there are general minimum times.

This was then moved in Ableton Live mixed and the other sounds added.

I found this one really hard and have struggled with it, but here it is.

Method: 
1. End of the cat in the ocean, which went into SuperCollider, this code cuts it up and replays it in a random order with different samples left and right.

2. The intro of broken robots, this went straight into Ableton live and was messed up in there.

3. A 2.17 second sample from broken robot, this went into SuperCollider and I used code to cut it up into micro-sounds and to also generate the beat track.

All this went into Ableton where is was arranged and fx's applied.

Question: What if I cut Re into 3 second sections, let the software re-sequence the sections into a new order, shape with a sine envelope and put through a reverb and delay effect (with varying delay time and amount)?

With this one I wanted to create not just a rhythm track but have some texture in it, I used only Ableton Live and its built in effects.

Sound was recorded with a contact mic.
