For the Disquiet Junto Project 0579: Memory Serves
The Assignment: Rerecord a piece of music.
What would it sound like if a funk band covered one of our songs? This is the posthumous question explaining this loose approximation of the Creatures Once song Only (https://youtu.be/8ts7z71310M). The song is one of the first we made, and one my favorites. The original drums were step sequenced when I was first learning Ableton and the Push. A little too on the grid rigid maybe. So as the drummer in my imaginary funk band, I have always wanted to play live drums along with this song to get a looser groove going. So that’s how I started. After playing some busy live drums (I was excited), the imaginary funk band’s bass player and dual keyboardists decided to try and recreate the bassline, and some of the melodic parts. I (they) did this by looking at the steps lighting up on the Push pads, listening to the guitar, then trying to play them from memory. So it came close (not really) but much looser and not exactly the same, which is fun. Something the imaginary funk band would do if you played them a song once and said, “ok, go play it!” I kept jus a few snippets from the original in here for flavor.
I have always wanted to try and re-learn and recreate a previously recorded song (maybe try and play something live). Now I know it will be as hard as I imagined, but fun. Also a good way to create something brand new.

Only Memory -[disquiet0579]

Written for Disquiet Junto 0579. Ran out of time, of course, but tried to revisit a track that I previously made in 1993 using OctaMED ( https://soundcloud.com/floor-51/betrayal ) . Still prefer the original, but with a bit more time I think this mix could be ok. I'm not so keen on using the 1984 samples - actually lower quality here than the ones I was playing on the Amiga, I think - but it didn't seem honest to revisit the track without them.

a new betrayal [disquiet0579-memoryserves]

My take on this week’s topic is based on the idea of an evolving eco system and how individual organisms contribute to their environment.

In my case, the environment is my small studio in the attic of my house and the individual organisms are the various synths, modular and otherwise, that are all connected to one another in some form. More specifically, my method is as follows:

1) I have selected a single tone or very simple sonic element that I think best represents the character of a particular synth, module or a self contained patch;
2) Each of these tones or sonic elements are triggered and fed into a chaotic looper, in my case the Soma Cosmos in combination with “Airport Looper” created for the Zoia, which are fed back into each other via a matrix mixer;
3) I wait to hear what happens;
4) The aim is to resist triggering further tones and sonic elements but since evolution is not a predictable or rule based process, I might do so. After all, I am also part of this eco system, and as such, cannot keep silent.

Instruments used: Buchla Easel Command, 1010 Music Synthbox, Arp 2600, Arturia Drumbrute, Microfreak, Microbrute 2s, Lyra-8 and the Inner.

This was my contribution for the Disquiet Junto Project 0580:Evo Evil Evolve.

This is my interpretation of the evolution of plant communities through the ages – from the smallest of flora to massive forests. It's also an imagining of photosynthesis beginning with the first rays of morning sunlight.

I initially created this over a year ago but ended up totally reworking most of it for this project. The final couple minutes is a little too over-the-top than what I would have liked, but I decided to keep it rather than rework that section. 

Main audio was created on an iPad using Spectrum Modal, Zoa and Xynthesizr apps, and imported into Ableton Live. Supporting tracks were added using FRMS, Pigments, and Minifreak V software instruments. Forest image by Casey Horner via Unsplash.
