Our Ancestors Stand Behind Us on guitar by Miranda Rondeau

An invocation, an invitation, for the goddess Aphrodite to illuminate our way through passion’s uncertainties. Performed and composed by Bettina Joy de Guzman on Luthieros 9-string chelys lyra, lap harp, Remo 16-inch frame drum, cello, and finger cymbals, chanted in Ancient Greek (Sappho, fragment 1).


Album notes:
A woman sits alone on a dark evening, worn thin by Love’s manipulations. She has ridden out the first cruel enticement of hope, then the delirium of infatuation. And now comes the inevitable dagger of heartbreak.

As she looks back over the emotional storm that has left her drained and shattered, she wonders: Is Love no more than an impersonal force? Or might She be an entity who would sympathize if one prays to her? And if so, how does one pray to such divinity? 

Following instincts she does not understand, she lights a candle. She begins an invocation. 


Ποικιλόθρον᾽ ὰθάνατ᾽ ᾽Αφροδιτα…
δολόπλοκε, λίσσομαί σε
μή μ᾽ ἄσαισι μήτ᾽ ὀνίαισι δάμνα,
πότνια, θῦμον…

ἔλθε μοι καὶ νῦν, χαλεπᾶν δὲ λῦσον
ἐκ μερίμναν ὄσσα δέ μοι τέλεσσαι
θῦμοσ ἰμμέρρει τέλεσον… 


“iridescent- throned, Immortal Aphrodite…
weaver of wiles, I pray you 
That you do not, with pains and with torments 
crush down my heart, o lady...


And come to me now, and release me from cruel cares;
and all that my heart desires to fulfill,
I pray thee, fulfill…”


Her heart beats. Her body sways to a rhythm and dances to a song, as ancient as the grass and the sea.

And from some deep place within herself, a voice hums back. Someone hears. Someone understands.

Invocation To Aphrodite

Bienaventurad@s los  hijos e hijas de la Luz que conocen su Madre Tierra. 

Ella es la Dadora de  Vida. 

Reconoce que eres  parte de tu Madre y Ella es parte de ti 

Ella te generó y te dio la Vida, 

Ella te dio el cuerpo que tienes, el mismo que un día volverá a Ella. 

Saber que la sangre de tus venas fue sacada de la sangre de tu Madre Tierra 

Su sangre cae de las nubes del  cielo y  corre por su vientre

burbujeando a través de los arroyos de montaña;

y en flujos de abundancia a través de los ríos en las sierras.

Reconoce que el aire que entra en tu cuerpo,

es la respiración de la Madre Tierra.

Su aliento es el cielo azul celeste,

Sus susurros, las hojas del bosque.

Reconoce que la firmeza de tus huesos se creó a partir de la solidez de los huesos de tu Madre.

La suavidad de tu cutis ha nacido de la carne de tu Madre Tierra.

La Luz de tus ojos, el alcance de tu audición,
floreció a partir de los colores y  sonidos de tu Madre, que te rodea.

Como las olas del mar acaricia a los peces,

Como el aire que vive y abarca las aves.

En verdad te digo que tú eres un@ con tu Madre.

Ella es una con contigo

Como tú eres un@ con ella.

De ella has nacido, en ella vives  y  volverás

a sus leyes y respeto.

Su aliento es el aliento;

Su sangre es la sangre,

Sus huesos son los huesos,

Su carne es la carne;

Tu eres  los ojos y los oídos.

Bendit@ es el Hijo o la Hija de la Luz que encuentra la Paz con la Madre Tierra,

Debido a que no gustará de la muerte,

Reconoce la Paz en su mente.

Anhelamos para Ella la Paz en su Corazón;

Date cuenta de la Paz en tu Cuerpo.

Esfuérzate por ser Feliz;

Ámate a ti mism@ y Evoluciona.
