I'm embarrassed to say this but I'm a huge fan of ABC.

My love for all kinds of rave music from back in the day re-emerged during hibernation (UK lockdown 3) and after digging around for months on end to get the right tracks together, I've now recorded some mixes - straight up DJ sets using a pair of technics 1200s and a Rane62 mixer. As pioneers of the UK breakbeat/jungle scene, I doubt Smiley & PJ need any introduction. This two-part mix compiles many of my favourites from their extensive back catalogue, including the seminal LP ‘Dance Before the Police Come’ in its entirety.

Part 1 focuses slightly more on their rap roots. Part 2 leans towards the breakbeat sound that saw the rave scene adopting them back in the early 90s.

It's exactly 30 years ago today that the Hughes brothers' hood classic Menace II Society hit US cinemas, and what better way to celebrate than with a retrospective mixtape. In a similar-ish vein to the recent GTA Radio Los Santos mix (https://on.soundcloud.com/tnQEMjC4ECVSZx8u9), here's the entire OST, cut up with remixes/bonus beats/acapellas and a stack of movie dialogue threaded throughout. It's possibly one of my favourite mixes I've ever done. Sending this one out to fellow MIIS binge-watcher and heavyweight champion dialogue-reciter Ell @user-994456338, Olly @wiseguisedjs, plus a big shout to Richard for taping most of the soundtrack off for me back in the day - this is where my enduring love for gangsta rap really began.

The Essential Mix is a weekly radio show on BBC Radio 1 currently broadcast between 0:00 - 2:00 AM UK time on Saturday morning. Originally broadcast on 30 October 1993, the Essential Mix features contemporary DJs and music producers of electronic dance music. The show has been presented since its inception by Pete Tong and features an uninterrupted two-hour mix from a different artist each week, overlaid with occasional continuity announcements delivered by Tong. With a broadcast run in excess of 25 years, the Essential Mix is one of the longest-running programmes in the current BBC Radio 1 schedule, and is one of very few Radio 1 shows which is not broadcast live.
