On this program we survey the careers of two giants within their genres. Bunny Wailer is the last surviving member of the original Bob Marley and the Wailers trio. Right up to his 2016 tour, where we met him, this architect of reggae music has continued to carry the banner with new concerts and recordings. And he tells his story with bracing poetic candor. Meanwhile in Egypt, Hakim, the lion of shaabi music, remains a superstar and a player in that country’s turbulent pop scene. On a rare visit to New York, Hakim gives us a tour through his post-revolution songs, and offers personal insights into Egypt’s equally turbulent politics.

Dj set sewn by the incredible JP, backtracking us with a post-ska kind of music: Rocksteady.

Perfectly crafted for the 60s’ nostalgics, this set is made of the very best of rocksteady icons. Tendentious and flimsy at the same time, this selection is a simple invitation to glide along and enjoy every minutes of pure pleasure strengthened by the presence of some undebatable gems.

From the likes of Slim Smith, Peter Tosh and The Imperials, the Dj set unveils a rare selection of impressive audio gems that enable each listener to get an overview of the roots of reggae music through the spectrum of ska, rocksteady and skinhead rocksteady classics. 

Jamaican music isn’t just about mainstream and overheard reggae artists and this soulful compilation is a great revival of the undiscovered Golden debut of Caribbean music. 

Eventually, rocksteady was very popular and echoes the best days of Jamaican music however it was short-lived and turned rapidly into reggae by the end of the 60s. 
Based on early R&B beats, jazz, ska, African and Latin drummings, rocksteady is a soothing music genre, slightly groovy and dead good!

The guitar riffs drive us through a daydream, a heartfelt moment however the vocal harmony of the singers, the offbeat rhythms and the exquisite organ keys such as the melodica sounds are the very essential ingredients that make rocksteady such a good genre.

56 minutes and 26 seconds during which each notes should be deeply enjoyed. A slow dance tempo and dreamy melodies: the sandy beach and a breathtaking view are the only missing elements to take this selection from an excellent level to a flawless level.

‘The rare side of Rocksteady’ is a powerful tribute to a genre hard to recall but highly appreciate by vinyl  and music lovers.

A mix of dusty Afrobeat, Afro-funk, Afro-rock and Highlife from back in the day, recorded in one take from original vinyl (from the late 70s and early 80s period). Most of these are regular play out tunes for me at Dial Africa sessions, some a bit crackly as you might expect from vintage African vinyl. Special request to all of our friends, special guests and regular session attendees, promise we will be back in full force when the Corona situation blows over! In the meantime stay safe and enjoy the mix (& pray that it doesn't affect Africa too badly! Baaba Maal has toured the world, backed by his electric group, Daande Lenol. Sometimes he has performed as an acoustic duo with his longtime musical partner, Mansour Seck, on guitars and vocals. And rarely, Baaba has assembled a large acoustic group featuring guitars and traditional instruments. We caught such a moment at one of our all time favorite live recordings, Baaba and his acoustic big band performing at Joe's Pub in New York City. Beautiful!
