Conceived as part of an A/V show with visual artist Nicolò Cervello, ‘Kitbashing’ marks ABADIR’s third album for SVBKVLT.

A growing number of people spend an extensive amount of time watching, scrolling, liking, commenting on and sharing content, whilst at the same time feeding a constant stream of personal data to social media platforms. Social media can be fun and informative, or draining and dark. Either way, their algorithms are purposefully designed to lock users in a continuous state of scrolling. The more time spent online, the more desires, interests and emotions are fed into the algorithm for consumerist ends and reality is reduced to a timeline of curated aesthetics.

Using audio snippets from reels, suggested posts, and sponsored ads, sound objects are cut, micro-edited and meshed together into a collage. Tension is built gradually before falling into a release. Rhythms keep expanding and contracting, simulating the pace of random scrolling on mobile devices. ‘Kitbashing’ is an attempt to break the algorithm: subverting the dynamics by feeding on the algorithm instead of only feeding it.

As his trademark producer tag goes: “DJ K is no longer producing. He is doing witchcraft!” — a reference to his style of funk mandelão called bruxaria (Portuguese for “witchcraft”). Like mandelão, the Brazilian artist concocts sampled sounds — anything from Arabic strings or baile funk’s trademark whistle sound (assovio) to a child’s voice — into a pointillistic tune stuck in an evil-sounding key. He overlaps this with MC vocals and the giggling of pixies and imps, adding jackhammer techno kicks that sends everything ragdolling. But the key to DJ K’s bruxaria is a high-pitched frequency that mimics the ringing sensation of the popular street drug lança-perfume (AKA loló), and makes Aphex Twin’s 'Ventolin' sound like ambient music to sleep to. K’s music is a black hole to be sucked into, its components hitting on-cue each time but with the angle titled and stakes raised. 

On his second album, DJ K builds on the international acclaim of his debut, turning his attention to legacy and social change.

"I made a mix with my songs from the new album, of course, but my main focus was to include exclusive tracks that I haven’t released on any platform yet. I hope you enjoy them - these will be some of my upcoming works. I also added the tracks I played the most at Helipa throughout all these years. Hope you like it!"

"Rebound" is the new EP from Zero Crossing Points coming out on katharsis on November 17th, a work that feels both intimate and expansive, drifting between reflection and release. Drawing elements from several genres, the EP ranges from quiet and discrete soundscapes, to vivid blasts of raw emotions. Fragments of voice appear throughout, human yet often transformed, woven together with sweeping synths, bowed strings, digital manipulations, and textures that feel at once fragile and grounded. The result is a sound world that blurs the line between the synthetic and the organic, the remembered and the reimagined. Japanese video game music dances together with musique concrete elements, echoes of sacred music meet screaming metal drones. There is a sense of searching that runs through Rebound - it is music that lingers in the in-between, where distortion becomes tender and introspection turns into motion.
