Vertere - Mind Against & Somne

Constantly turning around itself, the winding melody of Vertere turns outward and inward at the same time, bringing the listener on a journey outward while mirroring a simultaneous labyrinthine journey inward. Like the word itself, Vertere, with its roots in the Latin word Verto (which itself takes its roots in the earlier Sanskrit word, Vartayati) it signifies the very nature of change itself. It means both to turn and reflect inward and yet also move forward — a call to action for setting in motion new things. A paradox at first glance but also perhaps a surprisingly accurate description of the destructive and reconstructive nature of creation. An apt metaphor for this bright new collaboration between established Life and Death artists Mind Against and the new artist project of Federico Maccherone, aka Somne.

On remix duties, when you have an artist of the caliber of Tobias Freund, you don’t need to ask for anything more and with his outstanding remix of Vertere he very clearly shows why. This long time mainstay of the electronic music scene has managed to stay not just relevant but on the cutting edge longer than most with respected releases on some of the most seminal imprints to be putting out music in the world of underground dance music. With Vertere he takes what’s already top quality material and somehow manages to turn it inward and in his own unique way elevate it to another level entirely. With a relentless beat and a sonic force that is hard to describe with mere words the Tobias. remix of Vertere comes out of the gate like a runaway machine rapturously drunk on its own self awareness. It marches ever forward, full of fervor, and will surely be driving dance floors both large and small to the euphoric edge of the ecstatic state.

UK artist Kris Davis’ “Bleak” EP on Christian Löffler’s dance label, Young Alaska. Löffler aims to make music that “combines melancholy with euphoria”, and it seems evident this vision is reflected in his own imprint with Davis’ forthcoming release.

The title track “Bleak” embodies that same “happysad” feel described by Löffler, with warm-sounding, tic-tock beats, crackling background atmospherics and echoing vocals. Minimal, serene and intricate, “Bleak” is a dance floor cut that’s designed to keep the floor moving in the early hours or for walking alone in a snowy forest at dusk.

If the “Bleak” EP were a landscape, Davis' B-Side “Empathy” would be the spacious swath of winter sky embracing the frozen earth. At once somber and uplifting, with airy tones and a gentle yet driving rhythm, “Empathy” takes the listener on a naturalistic ambient journey to the far-away reaches of sound.

Kris Davis’ “Bleak” EP is the second release on Christian Löffler’s Young Alaska label. Still in its infancy, the imprint has seen past releases by Christian Löffler and Mind Against.

Premeire: Animal Trainer 'I Have A Cat'

The 15th instalment of Diynamic Music’s “Four To The Floor” series is here. By now they have become a go-to resource for DJs looking for dancefloor-oriented music as all tracks of the series have been heavily road tested and certified by label boss Solomun on his countless gigs all over the world, hence being great assets for peak time sets.
Opening the release is Dino Lenny’s “I Lost Appetite”, which is inspired by the classic 80’s track “Flying Turns” from Crash Course in Science. The band gave their approval of Lenny’s production and are credited as co-writers to this nostalgic chaser. Following up is Hamburg-bred Doctor Dru, with his similarly eerie and 80s enthused “Kloeppel”, a deep dark disco house track.
The second half of the record begins with “Roast” by The Organism, a very synth heavy melodic techno tune that slowly builds a dark retro ambience with almost mathematical precision. And finally “1991” by Berlin-based Budakid, whose dreamy house pads give this edition of the FTTF series a very round finish.

Doctor Dru - Kloeppel (Preview)

After a brilliant contribution to Truesoul’s V/A in 2017, OC & Verde land their debut EP on the imprint.

It’s been a little under two years since the Mancunian duo dropped ‘Naaki’ on Truesoul’s VA compilation, giving label followers the first taste of their classy sound. The duo’s imitable knack for producing groove-driven dancefloor heat make them a dream fit for Adam Beyer’s daytime sets and when the label boss warmed up Drumcode Festival playing B2B with Ida Engberg on day 2, it was OC & Verde’s ‘Cloak & Dagger’ that highlighted the early shift. 

The perfect primer, ‘Cloak’ builds anticipation in spades thanks to its slick mix of exotic chords, tribal chants and incessant bass melody that runs throughout. By contrast, ‘Dagger’ is intended as the stirring closer to a party, marked by swirling synth effects, pads and a dramatic melody line.
