Envisaging a trustworthy approach to sound, French DJ and producer Voiski has steadily built a name for himself in contemporary left-field dance music. He took a singular path in techno, oscillating between experimental projects and signature sound dance floor material. The Parisian brings his versatile skills together on the third installment of Dekmantel’s UFO series, serving up five completely different yet coherent sounding tracks. 

The beat lacking ambient synth jam 'Go To A Mountain' is a display of Voiski's ear for mesmerizing soundscapes, while the pulsating, Nintendocore fuelled 'Happy Piece' and the dark, bass-heavy 'Seriously No' are two peak-time beasts. On the B-side, 'Come Back' gives you a glimpse of what the future of techno sounds like, whereas 'Drama In the Futuristic Cabinet' echoes Hi Tech Soul gone breakbeat. Welcome to the Dekmantel family, Voiski!

For its fourth release, Harry Agius aka Midland's Graded label has signed its first new act in the form of Montreal-based Solitary Dancer. With ‘Desire & Apathy’ being instantly familiar to anyone who heard Midland's Essential Mix earlier this year— in which it subsequently proved to be a much asked about inclusion— this eponymously titled release marks the debut of Solitary Dancer, as well as Agius' second time stepping into the role of label A&R following Hubie Davidson's appearance on Graded's ‘Regraded' sub-label last year.

From the opening moments of the EP's title track it is apparent why Aguis welcomed this release to the label, with 'Desire & Apathy' highlighting Solitary Dancer's similarly shared talent for elegant, richly-sculpted sound design and a knack for propulsive club rhythms that eschew rigid 4x4 drum patterns. 'Desire & Apathy' takes a classic electro beat and through the use of elegaic pad washes and swells of sinister bass notes morphs it into persistently engaging shapes. 

The B-side's 'Paradise Found' is a suspenseful coralling of intriguing sonic elements, with its fractured beats combined with a cinematic sense of drama and melancholy that's brought to the fore on the beatless 'Rapture Version' which brings Solitary Dancer's first release to an impressive close.

2018 sees Hulkkonen celebrate the 25th anniversary of his debut release. That’s a quarter of a century to all you non-mathematicians! “In a way I wanted to do an album that continues the journey I’ve been on with these last 4 albums on My Favorite Robot Records, but I also wanted to add some references to some of my older releases, you know for the true heads out there”, Jori quietly whispers from behind his trademark wineglass and a cigarette.
Starting off with futuristic and dark r’n’b sung by Jori himself in Finnish, ‘6n Jaakaappi’ was constructed almost entirely of samples recorded from a very noisy fridge backstage at legendary Helsinki club, Kuudes Linja. Next up, ‘Black Rainbow is an instrumental funeral ballad with a slavic vibe, mixed with an 808 and funky drummer beats. Classic Jori.

“On the Road to Miero” was written after musical novice Hulkkonen went to see a true maestro, Ennio Morricone performing live in Finland some while back. Incorporating elements from deep house and an ethereal vocal performance from up-and-coming Finnish artist Leeko, the track was Jori trying to “sound as Italian as possible and not failing completely”. Something he pulls off with aplomb!

Finally, “Plastic Freedom” revisits some of the Detroit-esque sound and rhythm scapes of Jori’s classic releases back in the 90’s. As opposed to modern DAW-based productions, it was recorded as a live jam and edited down later.
This wonderfully varied selection raises the question as to whether the album will fill in the gaps between these eclectic tracks so take the listener further into the outer realms of sound and space.  The answer will come in September.

Premiere: Agents Of Time 'East Coast'

Todd Nickolas and Dominic Paterson were born and raised in rural South-Western Ontario Canada, an unlikely setting for the kind of leftfield music they grew up with and eventually produced. They had the good fortune of having older relatives into alternative underground music, so much of the late 70s and early 80s were spent plundering record collections and making mixtapes. Todd and Dominic met in high school, geeking out over each other’s Kraftwerk and Depeche Mode shirts. In 1987 they started making music together, which wasn’t easy to categorize as their personal styles and musical tastes were constantly evolving. From synthpop and EBM/industrial, to electro and early hip hop and house music, to post-punk and dub and all points between, whatever the duo encountered was embraced enthusiastically. The transition into the techno and ambient years of the 90s was therefore a natural one, their early influences always finding their way into their productions one way or another in addition to the new sounds they were creating. The rave era was a revelation for them, because there they found their people and scene. The anything-is-possible optimism that went along with it coincided with a general twentysomething feeling of youthful euphoria about a world full of possibilities. Infinities of Life was originally released in 1994 as part of the 12” Universality EP (Floorshaker Productions). This percussive techno-trance track perfectly captures the xtc euforia that swept across warehouse dancefloors back then.

You never get used to the feeling of cold steel plunging into your brain stem. A moment of muscular convulsion and a metallic aftertaste are a breeze compared to the eye-strained methods my grandfather used to enter virtual realms. Bypassing the archaic detour of beaming data through the senses, hardlining straight to the brain is the favoured method of those seeking a ‘true to life’ experience. As the program boots, vision withdraws and the world collapses. Like the moment in a dream where you’re unsure of your surroundings, but your mind fills in the gaps, the spectacular nature of this voluntary world becomes normality. 

Based out of the Netherlands, the Coloray helmed label ‘Intercept’ is on release duty for Lewski’s latest, Military Simulations. Across its three tracks, Lewski unleashes his unique approach to sound and rhythm, sprinkling the release with otherworldly instrumentation, whilst constantly the building the suspense. Our pick is the title track, an industrial techno stomper, with the best elements of electro and acid thrown in for good measure. The track’s bleeps and warbles atop frantic percussion build excitement for the cyberpunk raves of our near dystopia.
