Sailor & I are back with their latest productions for Life and Death. The two original tracks, while very different in moods, both share lush productions and a dramatic musical storytelling not often found in a typical dance release. While Boys & Girls offers a slowed-down mournful and yet beautiful nostalgic tale of childhood days gone by, Turn Around comes straight out of the gate like a racehorse on fire, flanked by strong strings and a vocal that pleads a case for love that comes straight from the heart. 

And of course rounding out the release is arguably one of the most anticipated tracks of the summer. Ever since it first started falling on people’s ears earlier this year, the Âme remix of “Turn Around” has been the high point of sets by Tale of Us, Dixon, Mano Le Tough as well as the few select others that have had their hands on it up until this point. It’s been giving goosebumps to club goers everywhere and with good reason — this is Âme at their finest, taking the song and extending it into an epic masterpiece that works wonders on a dancefloor while never losing the bewitching essence of the original.

After a brief hiatus, More Music is back and this time the This Is Music subsidiary has enlisted the help of Kresy in the shape of a 4 track Ep.

Having been so impressed with his Basement Trax 12” released on John Talabot's Hivern Discs back in 2012, he was immediately on our radar as someone to keep an eye. 2014 has already seen Kresy release music on Jimpster's Freerange Records and a two track release for Jay Shepherd's Retrofit label, both solidifying our respect and love for his analogue-heavy take on house music. It is therefore an absolute pleasure to announce this four-track release which also includes a remix from Flux residents Aartekt. 

The title track jacks back and forth breaking down to a 2 step whilst wailing pads sore across. Expresso moves things down to the basement with a low slung groove that develops before stripping back to create perfect warm up fodder. Sticky heads back to the main room with Kresy’s Chicago influences shining through. Aartekt concludes the ep with a remix where driving bass and drums and a nod to the 80s keeps it brooding yet effective on the dancefloor.

Ellen Allien is the DJ, producer and t-shirt designer and all round creative that has carved her own path in the house and techno game. Born in Berlin, Ellen witnessed the fall of the Berlin wall and in the resulting surge of creativity and electronic music culture, soon became an integral member in the growth of the city’s techno scene. With early residencies at Tresor and E-Werk, Ellen laid down her foundations in the city and soon, label management and running parties joined her agenda. Fast forward to today and we see the techno veteran at the helm of one of Berlin’s most iconic labels, BPitch Control, continuing to throw parties and design, all whilst keeping up one hell of a hectic DJing schedule. We are super excited to have the BPitch Controller in the mix for i-D with a very special 45-minute blend of pure vinyl. Press play.

Today’s Truancy Volume comes from our favourites AKA the boys behind Bicep. We first heard of Andy Ferguson and Matt McBriar a few years ago through their very own blog Feel My Bicep, and they have been two of our top selectors ever since. Seeing the London-via-Belfast duo establish themselves as some of the most captivating DJs and producers around has been a joy to witness – the likes of “Silk” (‘11), Satisfy (‘13) and Circles (‘14) still being as popular as ever round Truants’ way. Their recent schedule also speaks volumes about their current thrive and popularity among listeners across the board, comfortably delving between house, techno and disco whilst also having plenty of time for Bollywood soundtracks, atmospheric drum and bass and new age ambient music in their downtime. Following a limited 12” for their XOYO residency and their Just EP on Aus Music, they’ve just released the mighty Dahlia EP in collaboration with fellow producer and long-time friend Hammer. Gerd Janson also recently enlisted them to contribute to his Musik For Autobahns 2 compilation, with their sublime track entitled “Carmine” and you can also look out for a track called "Closing Sequence" forthcoming on 50 Weapons as part of the label's final run of releases. 

Having carved up such a reputation for themselves, it was no wonder Bicep were asked to lead a residency at London’s XOYO over this year's summer period: they just finished their 13-week workout last Saturday, which consisted of a strong curated roster including the likes of Derrick May, The Black Madonna, Palms Trax and Space Dimension Controller. The two have an equally crazy agenda coming up: from their next Feel My Bicep night at Amsterdam Dance Event featuring the likes of Midland, Optimo and Sandrien as well as their next Australia/NZ tour.

The pair has unquestionably been responsible for some of our fondest music-related memories over the years: from sunny afternoons at Dekmantel and ZeeZout, to getting caught by surprise by means of their Dominica edit at other festivals. Their final instalment at XOYO was also one for the books – going from “Just” to Art Crime and Devilfish in proper confetti-canon style fashion. Featuring recent tracks from Mikael Seifu and Dawit Eklund to 2000 era house from Joshua Iz, we’re thrilled to share Bicep’s mix for Truants with you. Equally as uplifting as it is danceable, it is more importantly 100% Bicep vibes. We also spoke to Andy and Matt about their creative processes on both a musical and visual level, what music from beyond the dancefloor they’re currently loving, and their upcoming album.

Audiomatique Recordings turn up the goods once again with another fine collaboration. Steve Bug’s label has long been a home to classy deep and affecting house and techno, and Leave Us continues this legacy.

Norway’s Djuma Soundsystem teams up with Pete Oak to deliver a sumptuous futurist rhythm track, full of slinky hooks, rumbling bass and restrained, deep chords.

It makes the perfect basis for Lazarusman’s spoken word sermon, as the South African producer and vocalist takes us on a spiritual journey to the outer reaches.

Pete Oak, the Danish producer whose tracks have graced numerous prestigious labels, adds a deeper tinged dub to the release, pushing things further into the stratosphere.

August 8th sees Intec’s esteemed label co-heads Carl Cox and Jon Rundell both put their own unique spin on Josh Wink’s illustrious 2014 hit ‘Talking To You’, distributed via the aforementioned imprint.

This impressive two-track offering follows a whole host high quality 2016 Intec releases including the Beatport chart topping ‘Intec 100’, which last saw Carl and Jon team up to deliver a release well worthy of its billing. 

Carl Cox’s interpretation commences the release, boasting the original’s ‘I’m Talking To You’ vocal sample set to a driving Tech House rhythm with a looped-up manipulated chord riff and an abundance of squelchy acid bleeps. 

Jon Rundell’s re-work follows and ventures down more of a darker Techno route, utilising the original’s vocal sample and acidline but adding a pounding TR-909-laden groove, sinister sound effects and a clever arrangement.   

You can catch the Ovum Records label boss Josh Wink perform alongside Carl at his final ever season at Space Ibiza (every Tuesday until September 20th) on August 16th.  

‘Talking To You’ (Carl Cox & Jon Rundell Remixes) is available exclusively via Beatport from August 8th and everywhere else two weeks later.

Born and raised in the Netherlands, in his teenage years Mike quickly became infatuated with electronic music. It was the likes of Cassius, Daft Punk and DJ Falcon that pulled him towards the French House realm. The uplifting melodies and funk driven bass lines inspired him to dive in to audio production for himself. Through his work ethic and passion for the craft, Mike powered through a few other genres before arriving at his true love: dirty, gritty, Tech House. The trademark French filtered break downs remained, but today are accompanied by bass heavy and filth covered beats. His credo: "if they move, they approve", allow for some pretty straightforward 4x4 productions.
