Gappy Ranks, one of the leading figures in UK dancehall returns with one of his first singles in years with SF Bay Area producer Kush Arora. "Money Bags" is an introspective look on his journey from childhood to his current home in the UK. He shares hopes of aspirations and vulnerability not often expressed in the genre, all while Arora's wavy Punjabi touch of bashment flows underneath.


Formerly of Greensleeves records, he has charted with hit "Stinking Rich", and been a top UK reggae artist collaborating with everybody from the Kray Twinz, Beres Hammond to Lethal Bizzle. Not to mention his prowness in exploring future sounds in the electronic world, he's been a pioneer and has unmistakable voice and personable touch. Kush produces in the realm of indo carrbiean music, and has recently been featured in the Guardian Uk, Wire, Quietus, Fact Mag, and many more of pioneering cultural sounds.

Growing up listening to Mafia & Fluxy, Xterminator, Madhouse Records on rotation with now cult-classic Louie Culture cuts and the Indo-Caribbean flavors of Apache Indian, Kush Arora has long carried the iconic soundscape of dancehall close to his heart. Songs from these artists, whether they rumble through a soundsystem on a night out, remixed on jungle tapes, or from the artist’s roots, never felt out of place. With every new sound, even those seemingly unconnected to each other, everything began to coalesce. Arora’s palette shows appreciation for these connections - 2006’s 'Bhang Ragga' captured “dancehall bhangra in future dub” - and 'Visions' continues this tradition, featuring nods to the latest fusions of sound emerging from the British capital and beyond.

On 'Wine An Go Down', @blackout-ja harnesses a classic bashment feel - ruffneck meets rootsy vocals that come together perfectly.

SYSTEM Mix 068: Kush Arora AKA Only Now

Taking the reins for Tread's debut release is the unique Guava, whose previous releases on labels such as R&S and Holding Hands have made him one of the big names to watch in the left-field electronic world. Collaborating on the release are two of London’s finest session guitarists, Alex Blake and Leo Abrahams. Their impressive CVs include work with artists such as Jon Hopkins and Skepta, respectively.

Things open up with ‘In Cloud’, a blissed-out slab of broken techno, spaced out with guitar riffs played by Blake. Both ‘Libelle’ and ‘Equinox Meaning’ continue on this theme with a cut of bass weight, with more silky guitar performed by Abrahams on the latter. Dublin-based Sputnik One is on remix duties, turning ‘Libelle’ into a beefed-up club weapon fit for any sound system.

Comme Des Garçons is a statement piece from Front Bench. Across 41 minutes, he announces himself as an artist keen to tell a deeper story, as he ditches format and enters the sprawling, moody longform.

Through moments of synthy ambience, electronic hip-hop, sample-heavy dubstep, and full-blown vocal pop, these 10 tracks - written in two lonely lockdown weeks - pensively reflect on what has been a challenging and formative period.

London’s Holly Wilks makes a stunning vocal appearance on I Would’ve Meant It, the album’s jewel, and regular collaborator Tom Jarmey lends glitchy production to For A Very Long Time, as the album winds to its finale.

Comme Des Garçons marks an experimental shift towards a more commercially structured
sound, and marks an evolution for Front Bench, as well as for the sonic direction of his label.

Next in the series we welcome Zambian DJ and producer SHE Spells Doom.

SHE Spells Doom is an Electronic music project created by Zambian producer, Wamya Tembo. It draws inspiration from a number of his influences, such as: 80s Sci-Fi/Horror movies, (Congolese) Rhumba/Soukous, Gqom and early 2000s Rap production, which he mixes with House and Techno elements he picked up from time living in Geneva, Switzerland. His style can best be described as hazy but driving - usually seeking to create a visceral atmosphere without neglecting the dancefloor by combining trademark airy synth-lines with heavy drum programming. The past few years have seen him release work on labels such as Creme Records, Monstart, Sweat Equity, HTS, All Centre and Tresor. He has also dabbled in contemporary art projects - FELTWORLD, his art installation which was exhibited at BKhz Studio & Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa during a residency with the Fak'ugesi African Digital Innovation Festival in 2019 and in 2021 he scored "Nobody Is Okay" - a collaborative art installation between Swiss artist, Andy Storchenegger + Zambian poet/writer, Marita Banda - on show at Grosse Biennale 2021 and in 2022 at the National Art Gallery in Livingstone, Zambia.

For this mix, I tried to capture the frantic energy of the kind of week I was having when I made this mix. 
Felt a bit all over the place but mostly excited about a few changes coming up, musically + w/ life in general.
Expect lots of tempo switches, swooshes + rushing drums from some new favourites + artists who have inspired me/the S.S.D. project up till this point.
