Was it all a dream? Did Sebastian Mullaert and Johanna Knutson perform an all night long sleep concert inside a medieval church in Amsterdam? What? This is an 8 hour long album release? Well... YES! You aren’t dreaming... or shall we say, just not yet. Keep reading. 

Live At De Waalse Kerk 2019 is a recording from our sleep concert series Circle Of Live “In Dreams”, where all-night, improvised, live ambient performances explore the full range of mind states occurring between sleep and consciousness; a shared collective experience, a night of mutual dreaming. 

Taking place in the spectacular 15th century architectural marvel that is De Waalse Kerk church, Johanna Knutsson and Sebastian Mullaert guided the audience through their dreams for 8 hours during regular sleeping times. By means of live improvisation, Johanna and Sebastian used the misty borderland between sleep and consciousness to their advantage, through expansive ambient soundscapes. 

Can dreams be gently manipulated by a musical excursion through the unconscious landscape within? Can dreams be experienced collectively through a controlled collective experience? Will you float in a state of mind wondering whilst awake or enter a full on lucid dream? Or will you simply sleep like a baby? 

We invite you to find your own answers, weave a dream alone or share the experience together with a friend… perhaps organise your very own pillow rave.

The first of the Circle Of Live​ “In Concert”​ event series brings together five artists from the modern classical​ and ​electronic​ scene for a night of freeform improvisation, inside the crown jewel of South Sweden - the spectacular ​Malmö Live​ concert house.

P​roject founder Sebastian Mullaert​ performs alongside the rising star of UK leftfield house Laurence Gu​y​. Following a string of highly acclaimed releases on labels like ​Studio Barnhus, Ninja Tune ​and​ Shall Not Fade​, Laurence makes his highly anticipated debut in the project. His signature soulful touch blends effortlessly with Sebastian’s warm sonic landscapes and the rich orchestral layers of​ ​Subchamber Ensmble​. Under the creative direction of New York film composer​ Nathan Larson​, Subchamber Ensemble featured himself, performing on electric guitar and effect pedals, alongside​ Gerda Holmquist​ on cello, as well as ​Elina Nygren​ on viola - both members of the critically acclaimed ​Vindla String Quartet​.

Across the five live excerpts, the artists masterfully weave the contrasting worlds of techno, ambient, and classical music into a mesmerizing stew of surprising consistency. The music is contemplative and hypnotic, quiet passages of calm giving way to vivid bursts of energy and colour.

Zen polymath Sebastien Mullaert’s project Circle of Live marshals a raft of diverse global talents for ‘free-flowing collaborative jam sessions in clubs around the world’. This time round it brought together the Swedish musician himself, plus Spazio Disponibile gaffer Neel and the moody soundscapes of German techno-pundit VRIL as part of their ongoing collaboration. What’s clear for anyone following these three trajectories: the trio couldn’t be more perfectly aligned, their occult compositions are bound by a set of influences that border on the metaphysical. The music itself: meditative, deep, ruminant and transformative. Textured layer upon layer, these preternatural melodies and jerking beats are sublime astral audio from another dimension: Bassiani Podcast 170 is a freeform and mind-expanding journey through uncharted waters recorded live at the club back in December.

Reversion (noun): the final, often mind-melting, product of a deft studio act in which an original recording’s elements are rephrased in a unique new way.

You know this. We know this. Monaberry knows this. They proved it last month with Super Flu’s agenda-setting ‘Re:Dings’ EP and they’ve done it again with this stunning reconstruction collection of andhim’s 2015 Monaberry smash ‘Rollercoaster’.

The evidence is clear from the off as ‘Mr Bass’ gets knighted to Sir Bass with two beautifully contrasting remixes. First up is groove-chowing Leeds lothario wAFF who fires up the energy to hip-shaking tech-level and gradually re-introduces the original’s cosmic elements as the groove charges into the vanishing point. La Fleur, meanwhile, adds a much more ominous fog-horn style bass texture that groans moodily before the majestic melody cuts through a Garnier-level arrangement twist. Stunning.

‘Cloys’ also enjoys two superb reworks: Re.You provides a touching twist by paying close attention and respect to the original’s swampy, underwater harmony with additional percussion, a richer weight and a more restrained sense of emotion. Ever one for contrast, Eagles & Butterflies flips the original into a brighter narrative direction with a timeless undulating groove and dizzying cannon of humanised textures. A true yin yang reversion scenario; one for opening, one for elevating.

It’s down to Zurich’s Animal Trainer to sign off this beautiful reversion experience with a bulbously rotund basslicked take on ‘Rollercoaster’. Upping the tempo and stripped back the layers, the duo create more space for the woozy vocal soul snippets and a whole new melodic layer.

Mind-melting, deft and rephrased with innovative articulation, andhim’s originals have been paid the utmost respect from five of this decade’s most exciting new house talents. Monaberry knows this, we know this… Now you do too.

Pietro 'Bingo' De Lisi and Alex Carpentieri have generated quite a reputation for their music selection and production over the last 15 years. Identifying themselves as ‘dedicated purveyors of all that is good in house music’, and having the discography to back it up, System of Survival have had a massive influence on not only Italy’s house music scene, but on the international stage as well.

‘D-Votion’ marks the second studio album from the Italian duo, and the first release on their newest home, Get Physical Music. From the opening smooth pads of ‘Endless’, the album gives off an earthy warmth that can only come from a lifetime of experience. The
album keeps the vibe subtle and engaging, while still keeping the dancefloor in mind. ‘Packing’ starts in the heavens and end on the floor, and ‘Searching for a Wave’ takes the torch from there with a gritty bass sharing space with thick, yet soft chords, but it’s the
melody that is the highlight here, courtesy of Surfbit in a live studio jam session; it carries the track deeper into the night. This feeling of looseness, inspired by the jazzy groove is continues in the next track, ‘From Motor City With Love’; pulling the groove a good bit
deeper. 

‘Distortion Under Control’ throws us into a time machine, reliving the sounds and spirit that gave birth to House in the first place. The same could be said for ‘Lazy Days’, whose title leads us to believe just the opposite; the track turns out to be a rhythmic shuffler that delivers energy in all the right places. Next, the stunning vocals of rising Italian pop star Vhelade lends an enchantment to ‘Kutting’ with her stunning vocals, giving the track an unmistakable fire of passion. 

‘Breathe’, a catchy soulful disco number goes on to give the sunny, late-summer vibe that ruled the 70’s, and is born again here for 2016 while still retaining a timeless quality. The low, rolling jazz tones of ‘D-Votion’ present a careful balance of the organic and mechanical, with an creeping, ominous bassline that seems to revel in its own presence. Salvatore Stallone lends a careful ear here, adding a smooth finesse to the mix with the xylophonic melody. The final three tracks begin to slow the album’s momentum, ‘Peacefrog’ brings a bouncy blend of vocal delays (via Brandy and Bianca) and electrichustle whilst ‘The Bear, The Wolf And The Eagle’ hypnotizes with its rhythmic ambience and low-key approach. Finally, ‘Neon Sun’ takes us out on Roberto Bove’s live screaming electric guitars in a kind of dusty power ballad for a new age, leaving a lasting warmth long after the album has played out.

Rhythm and melody combine with haunting vocal to create a cool new history. Twin towers emerge from the sultry air of Malaysian skies, Westseven looks down from dizzying heights onto a Kuala Lumpur cityscape that never sleeps. Throbbing bass and thumping kick mirror the heartbeat of the city below. Vocals trip lightly atop the breeze on a hot and humid tropical night.

Pure silk flows through the SineRider sonic identity; aural chemistry offers a riot of colour from New England skylines. An explosion of sound erupts in a dazzling sonic firework display as a wall of sound teams down in golden glow through held chords and pitched vocal phrasing. Rippling pianos hypnotise in spinning circular Catherine Wheels, a galaxy of stars reveal themselves in a velvety backdrop.

One and once the same, or so it seems; infinity reflects a spinning figure of eight, “why do I?”"

June 27th 2019. An intolerably hot, midsummer day in the outskirts of Paris. The sun clenches the wheat fields around us in a deadly grip. Even the wind is afraid to move under the weight of the heat spell descending from the skies. The air feels so dense and sticky you could cut it in two with a knife.

Three sonic pilots: Neel, Sebastian Mullaert and Vril have just touched down in Aérodrome Melun-Villaroche…. 6000 square meters of aviation history in a hangar thick with the smell of machine oil, dust and the echoes of ghosts from times long forgotten. The site principal just shouted at us not to plug anything in the power sockets because the network in the building runs on double the usual voltage. Smoke machines are slowly filling the enormous space and the afternoon light, seeping through the windows, is cutting gigantic orange shapes though the room. The air is vibrating with a perfectly balanced mixture of tension and excitement. Half a ton of machines, all wired in the midst of it all, are ready to burst into an hour long fully improvised musical expression. This unsung mechanical symphony will become alive and take form in front of everybody for the very first time, as we have no plan or any clue where the flow of the music will take us all. And by all we mean potentially anybody, as we are broadcasting live on the internet, as imagined though the creative eye of ARTE maestro Sebastian Lefebvre and the seven camera operators waiting in position between the rusty aircraft.

Both humans and machines are overheating and driven to their very edge of existence. Vril’s 909 just collapsed from the heat… droplets of sweat are running through Sebastian’s forehead… Neel is gulping down one last sip of water before the film clapper drops down and the director’s voice reverberates GO through the room. What could possibly go wrong?
