Premiere: Dusky 'Bitter Lake'

Deejay Astral, the artist formerly known as Palace, is making moves to establish his new persona, and his new EP on W&O Street Tracks (out Dec. 7) should more than see to that. In the loosest possible sense, the three tracks that comprise Astral's self-titled three-tracker could be classified as house music. But it's so much more than that. None of the tracks on the EP stick to a rigid format, constantly toying with house music's innumerable tropes. "Phantasy", in particular, takes a deep house melody and distorts it to give it a crunchy analogue feeling not often heard in house music. Add to that the unsettling, tortured vocal refrain that drips with anguish and you've got a piece of house music that won't be forgotten in a hurry. This is one hell of an opening gambit and one we can't wait to see him top.


Premiere: Deejay Astral - Phantasy

Head Gibbonman Benwaa returns to releasing with his latest EP - Generate To Innovate. The Title track is a techy melodic number, deep in nature and twisting in its turns. The layers of simplistic pads set the background for a melodic journey made up of beautifully crafted sonic clicks and almost bell like tones that lead us into a serious feeling breakdown which brings an almost uplifting feeling from the duskiness we started from.
Bootleg Ben ever the purveyor of psychedelic sounds, brings exactly that to the table. With a reflection of the glitch tones and clicky melody he creates a more deep groove whilst keeping things on a more simplistic and even keel sonically, adding a vocal touch that sets this version off nicely.
Next up UNFUG brings his trademark sound of organ like pads and live played guitars to the table. Drawing out the melancholy from deep within the original to the fore, this contemporary feeling is just a beautiful piece of deep house set against wonderful hand percussion whilst getting deeper and deeper as the track progresses.
Finishing off the EP is another track from Benwaa. The Confliction Of Ego starts off in an almost techno fashion only for us to be led down the path of distraction by lushous building pads into an almost ethereal piano line to die for that can only bring us to a contemplative mood.

The yearlong hiatus is finally up. Ghost Culture is back, taking no prisoners whatsoever with this new double A-side release on Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sound. The acid flavour of the EP opener "Safe" sees Ghost Culture turning classic club sounds to a darker tone of house and techno. Still 'unashamedly club-rooted', the track sees progressions through different landscapes of dance music history – all painted within Phantasy's rubric of steady tension and euphoric release throughout.

It's a sumptuously savage entry to the mix CD's ranks and tracks from Mike Denhert, Marcel Fengler, Jimmy Edgar and Audion will have you flailing with intent. There's an exclusive cut nestled in the mix from the big man himself entitled 'Where Haus' and we've got the first spin. This one should come with a warning. 

The kick drums are out of this world, the drops are devilish and the breaks although short-lived, provide that much needed respite from the ferociousness throughout. Not for the faint-hearted but if you want your techno hard and unrelenting, Alan's served up a pearler.

German mainstay Kölsch has had a thunderous few years , fully establishing himself as a worldwide force to be reckoned with. His piano-drenched techno has been slaying sound-systems the world over and even after two incredible albums via Kompakt, we reckon the best is still yet to come. 

His remix of 'Trouble At The Séance' is deep, dark and full of lazer-beam synths that zip in-and-out of focus. Not much can be said about this one other than it's an absolute stormer and it's going to do some serious damage this summer.
