It’s hard to overstate the importance of ‘The Final Frontier’ in shaping modern electronic music. First released in 1992 by the unapologetically political Detroit collective, Underground Resistance, it remains an essential classic in the story of Techno. Underground Resistance’s stated objective was to “[electrify] the inner city with hi-tech, sci-fi thoughts and dreams”; to offer working-class Black Americans, through music, a vision of a bright future through community action. Final Frontier was the first of many tracks which underlined this mission in bold type.

The great Afrofuturist tradition of imagining Black emancipation through space travel is upfront; both in the Star Trek-referencing title, as well as in the music itself, which sounds like the perfect re-scoring to the “Stargate” scene in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Now, nearly 30 years after it was first unleashed, there is not a serious techno fan who does not consider this to belong on the highest echelon of electronic music’s Pantheon.

@davidcastellani presents ‘Requiem EP’ on his new Noetic imprint, including two explosive & hypnotic originals accompanied by a deep remix via boundary pushing producer @etappkyle.

Following a string of stand-out releases featuring revered remixers the EP is armed with a rework from Ukrainian producer Etapp Kyle, and follows the launch of Castellani’s ‘Metanoia’ set via Mixmag.

Opening proceedings is ‘Requiem’. Using syncopated rhythms carried on a thunderous kick, Castellani creates a deep Utopian atmosphere. The dense reverb has a hypnotic element, while metallic swipes
and an elusive saw wave spiking in the background maintains the celestial feeling. Higher frequencies are exerted during the tracks breakdown, intensifying matters before diving back into the hypnosis.

Next up is the fiery rework from Etapp Kyle. Maintaining the main riff and coy saw wave, he shifts the drumwork into a sputtering, punchy affair. Using distortion and changing the octave of the main sample,
the Ukrainian producer pivots the original into an energetic stomper.

Closing out is 'Absentia', a buoyant and cosmic expedition compiled of jagged chord and gated synth rhythms. Hi-hats open & close throughout along with elastic analogue bleeps that evolve and intertwine around the driving drumwork.

The word "resistance" is deeply embedded in the ethos of techno. For her debut release on the Tresor Records, the British artist and Tresor resident, IMOGEN, explores the concept of resilience; a related and equally vital concept.

Taking its name from a theological term meaning a fundamental change of mind or spiritual conversion, Metanoia is fuelled by IMOGEN's processing of what she describes as one of the most challenging years of her life.

Any struggle against injustice or misfortune takes time and effort which requires finding a fortitude within, not only to surpass the hardship itself but to not lose ourselves to despair or bitterness in the process.

IMOGEN's journey is summed up in the lead track, The Way She Moves - resilience is, after all, a persistence to continue, to move forward. The struggle against hardship is laid out in track titles like Tired Bones and Growing in the Dark before a sense of catharsis is reached in Breathe Again and Melancholy Flower. 

The music similarly mirror her experiences, passing through sadness, anger, before ultimately landing at acceptance and a newfound drive for self-actualisation and greater interoception; after all, the end goal of any resistance is liberation.
