We've been enamoured with Canadian producer SIM for some time, premiering 2019's incredible (and foreshadowing?) 'Lockdown' featuring 45DiBoss that was inspired by a period of hardship. The Montreal beatmaker recently signed to Nervous Horizon, the global electronic visionary label headed up by TSVI and Wallwork, who kick off their year with SIM's 'Terminate' EP. “Writing the ‘Terminate EP’ felt really intuitive and made sense,” SIM says. “As a raver kid myself, channeling this need to party towards my own craft was sort of therapeutic and gave me hope that a new era is on its way. Heavy subs shaking you to your core, squeaky synths echoing in the depths of the warehouse, sweat dripping down your face, this collective motion of hundreds of people, just moving to one rhythm. One pulse. That is what inspired me to write this EP." SIM's first entry point into music was within the dubstep scene, although he would later be introduced to the likes of Epic B, Uninamise, Hitmakerchinx and Brooklyn’s wider FDM network in New York. He now cites his main influences as artists like King Tubby and Dave Kelly, as well as Plastikman, Jeff Mills and Equiknoxx. 'Chased', which we're premiering now, wears those influences on its sleeve, fitting somewhere between the worlds of dancehall, FDM and gqom via razor sharp snares, stabbing bass and whirling alien synths.

A prominent figure of the new Durban electronic scene, Dominowe has become known for his complex and original take on Gqom. Debuting on Gqom Oh! in 2016 with 'Africas Cry', followed by the widely celebrated 'SiyaThakatha' EP, Dominowe’s most recent release was the 2020 'Away from Home' demo album - a project that raised funds to rebuild his home studio after a traumatic home break in.

Returning to Gqom Oh! with ‘UMTHAKATHI’, the new release see’s Dominowe take a fresh approach to production. Incorporating vocals for the first time, he also puts particular focus on melodies and basslines that will subconsciously make the listener want to dance, get up and ‘feel good'.

A key part of what makes the kuduro-techno amalgams coming out of Portugal so spellbinding stems from its humanity. From its Detroit beginnings, electronic dance music attempted to speed up the future, one driven and directed by machines in true sci-fi fanboy fashion. Yet the Angolan influences on Lisbon’s transcendent contemporary club sounds keep much of the music grounded in the now, its polyrhythmic foundations a worthy counterpoint to the wicked British and American producers gleefully embracing auditory ruthlessness and sadism.

A Lisbon native, DJ N.K. has been an active and pioneering participant in this vibrant scene for some time. His overdue debut full-length DJ Do Ghetto [Lit City Trax] is actually named for the crew he joined some ten years ago which also featured future stars DJ Marfox and DJ Nervoso, among others. Both artists join their compatriot on respective collaborative cuts, the former on the stuttering mission statement “Ghetto Sound Of Lisbon” and the latter on the honking “Hoy.”

Peppered with succinct namesake drops, DJ Do Ghetto’s contents include a dozen of N.K.’s priceless productions crafted by a seasoned practitioner of the craft, from the straightforward gallop of “Zuguza” to the more outré options of “Urban Mafia” and “Punched Horn.” The furious tempos of “Matumbina” and “Orixas Groove” capture the urgency of the best in techno without sacrificing melody. “Tribalistic Face” hustles towards a beatific beatless breakdown before quickly picking up the pace and adding further organic instrumentation to the balmy mix.

The label aims to present the most innovative and exciting underground electronic sounds, from the African Diaspora, via the Caribbean, Latin America, the UK and beyond. ANIMALS offers a new exploration into global club with a hard hitting statement of intent.

This 7 track musical journey through jungles, forests, and savannahs explores the brutality and beauty of wildlife,.Featuring collaborations with the Lesotho Shepherd poet Morena Leraba, bringing his native Famo style singing, rapping and poetry to tracks “ Tsemedi” and “Mantlapa en Litsiroane”.

Speaking about the forthcoming EP, JBS shared: “I wanted to make a record that felt like a dream in a jungle. A little psychedelic and connected to myths. I wanted it to feel like the end of ‘Apocalypse Now'. Nature reclaiming our houses, people receding into the trees. Surrounded by animals.”

The earthshaking BLUNT BLADES is the first single taken from ANIMALS, mixing gqom rhythms with a raw grime energy, just an example of how Jumping Back Slash infuses the styles and genres that influence him throughout the release.
