Herons first release with Soma is a single that brings a new and different sound to the label that is both interesting and engrossing. Reborn incorporates motifs and style drawn from various genres with wobbling bass and deconstructed rhythm sections influenced by certain areas of bass music. This convergence of distinctive forms helps the EP to maintain a dynamic structure with layers added sequentially and separate elements given their own focus throughout. Title track Reborn, follows the ingenuity represented throughout the EP combining various different elements. The track opens up with bold, bouncing rhythm matched well with the distinctive repetition of the bassline. Again these elements are carried on a wave of hi-hat and metallic rhythm which gives the track a recognisable edge. Coupled with the sharp synth line the track conveys an industrial feel and moves to slightly darker areas. The interplay between elements maintains a strong dynamic with rhythm parts subsiding to highlight the synths and effects being brought to the fore amongst well balanced interplay. Foolish Solina finishes off the EP with a perfectly old school feel. Deep pads open quickly followed by a bassline reminiscent of Saunderson-era techno. A stomping 909 kick flashes in alongside crisp ride cymbals as electronic fluctuations give this track a unique progression finally unloading a full assault from the 909 as the track moves into overdrive.This is a single that develops a new sonic avenue for Heron and Soma as the artist encompasses a busier and more prominent style.

Special Request joins forces with Nina Kraviz and Anastasia Kristensen, shattering the doors of perception over a four-track EP. ‘Through The Looking Glass’ drops 27th July on Houndstooth.

On the A side, Nina Kraviz provides two interpretations of ‘Curtain Twitcher’. ‘Alice Was Here Remix’ takes the intensity of the original and boils it into a 4/4 spin of frenzied basslines and distorted acoustics, punctuated by her languid reading of the Mad Hatter. For the ‘Samba Remix’, syncopated polyrhythms take charge of a fragmented melody.

Opening the AA side, ‘Looking Glass’ lures you down the rabbit hole with mysterious bleeps, only to reveal a whirlwind of stormy breaks and junglist percussion. Closing off the trip, Anastasia Kristensen’s remix of ‘Tiresias’ marches its way through a field of swollen bass and glitchy percussion.

Premiere: Justin Jay 'Back On Track' (PILO Remix)

The material featured on this EP was recorded in Berlin over the course of a legendary week-long exploit, the kind you read about at the movies. The music is a marriage of dark synth hooks and atmospheric sound design resulting from extensive Berghain-monitored brain damage. It is very fortunate that both artists were wearing their Twin Turbo friendship bracelets at the time or they may have never even gotten past the door.

In terms of raw intelligence, the top one percent of those reading of this will have picked up on the cues that these tracks are techno. The rest have nothing to feel bad about. Our hope is that both communities can work out their cognitive differences on the dance floor every night for the rest of their lives. Our business model depends on it.

A member of popular techno trio Agents of Time, Italian artist Fedele goes solo AF on his Turbo debut, No Mercy for Beginners. Against the backdrop of a nightmare international tour experience, Fedele channeled his negative feelings away from people and into creating darkly euromotional dancefloor catharsis. Try it sometime.

Sharp-eared lovers of listening may notice that lead track “Riot Revolte” purloins the loin jewels (the street-tough vocals) from Tiga’s 2004 classic, “Pleasure from the Bass.” DJ Hell noticed the shit out of this, introducing a mutant variation on the PFTB baseline into his lurid after-hours remix. Moreover, the entire EP recalls the legendary run of killer electro records that kicked off what many, many people refer to as Turbo’s Silver Age in the early-mid 2000s. This may be utterly meaningless, or it may herald the coming era of compressed cyclical time that will dictate dance music taste in the 2020s with the sort of mathematical precision rarely found outside pie chart software. Either way, you heard it here first.

The full EP "No Mercy For Beginners" is out digitally and on 12" vinyl on February 14th.
