Scuffed Recordings co-owner Wager (@wagerdj) debuts his new alias on the label with a four-track EP exploring his breaks, electro and bass influences.

London-based Wager (formerly known as High Class Filter) has spent the past few years building momentum as a DJ, with festival appearances at Glastonbury and Parklife, gigs across London and the rest of the UK, and a long-running residency on Reprezent Radio.

At the same time, he has built an in-the-know following with his productions, which have appeared on labels like Moveltraxx, Futurebounce, and Four40, and seen support on BBC Radio 1, 6Music, Rinse and NTS.

As one-half of the Scuffed Recordings team alongside Ian DPM, Wager has built the label into one of the most respected UK underground electronic labels of recent years.

The ‘Vector’ EP marks the first release under the Wager alias, and marks his first return to Scuffed since the Elemental EP in 2018.

Across four tracks, Wager explores a blend of club-focussed influences – from the acid-tinged electro slammers ‘Bump’ and ‘Vector’, to the sludgy ‘Acetic’, and rave-meets-grime workout ‘Prismatic’.

The Motoring records engine is fired up again with their second release of 2021. Elliot Saloman’s I Still Want features remixes from a duo in high demand Cortese and a debut for Coventry’s Mercia. The release offers 3 emotional club cuts which champion a fresh twist of deep leftfield house and breaks, tinged with UK influence, soaring atmospheres and emotive textures. The single represents an oscillation of the Motoring sound but demonstrates the broad sonic palette of the label, while honouring its ethos of celebrating combinations of components of the deeper side of electronic music.

Jheez we're back on the podcast with a power hour from one of MCR's finest crews - Kultura Collective. We've been well impressed with their forward thinking line ups & sick run of releases, so it's a pleasure to welcome them on and hear what they're digging atm.

Maya Q (@mxyi) releases her debut EP for Scuffed Recordings, weaving together her own unique take on influences from across the UK dance music spectrum. The New England-born, London-based DJ and producer has been building momentum throughout 2021, both with her productions and as a resident of the Co-Select collective. 

The ‘Spiral’ EP follows Maya’s appearance on the Scuffed Presents 005 compilation in early 2021 with her track ‘Belief’, which saw support from Jaguar and Jess Iszatt on BBC Introducing, among others. 

Since then, Maya released her ‘I Just Wanna’ EP through DJ Pitch and Simkin’s All Centre label, which further established her esoteric production style and her place as an artist to watch in the UK’s electronic music scene. 

On the EP’s title track, Maya comes straight out of the blocks with a jungle-inspired warper that pairs heavyweight bass with an unearthly melody and frantic breaks.

Waterfalls EP begins its journey with the eerie 2-step, warped sub frequencies of 'Bowen'. 'Trident Creek' then takes us into skittering broken beat territories, with Azure's signature percussive layers dancing throughout. 'The Chasm' dives deep into a break-beat driven frenzy accompanied by out of atmosphere bleeps and sirens. Closing the EP is a collaboration with producer Flandiz (Flesh Pig Recording), which blends acid lines with a silky garage beat and monstrous sub hits to deliver a groove for the dancefloor.

Each of the tracks are named after Waterfalls in Aotearoa. They came to fruition after travelling the South Island and seeing the wonder that waterfalls offer.

DaiSu's contribution to NBFG001 is a stunning production which utilises foley, the reproduction and manipulation of everyday sounds, to form a deeply transcendent atmosphere rooted in a styling which walks the line between dub traditions and contemporary uk bass.
