After a huge year that saw The Hacker & Gesaffelstein’s ZONE Records release acclaimed EPs from artists like Arnaud Rebotini, Remote and Djedjotronic, the label kicks off 2014 with a new three track EP from one of France’s most exciting producers, Maelstrom.

Hailing from an ancient French harbour city, Maelstrom grew up in Techno filled dark and grimy warehouses. Now he spends his days shuttered in darkness, working on his own music and his nights at clubs, raves and festivals passing that music on, inspiring another generation.

Now returning to ZONE Maelstrom picks up where he left off with the stark and dissonant 'Discord' EP. Three tracks that range from pulsing apocalyptic Acid to pipe banging Techno and Cybertronian Electro-Funk - it’s cold, remorseless yet brutally funky and sure to cement his position as one of Europe’s leading underground producers.

A quick needle-drop through Para One's "Club" LP, out on June 16th, 2014 on Because Music / Marble.

For about fifteen years, Para One (Jean-Baptiste de Laubier) has been leaving his mark on French electronica. Since his hip-hop beginnings and his part in the TTC adventure (and the Institubes record label), Para One has not worried too much about classifications and genres, wide gaps having been his trademark. He is a solo artist on “Epiphanie” (a milestone of 2.0 french touch) or “Passion” (his last album, more pop mid-tempo and introspective), a cinema composer (“Naissance des pieuvres” by Céline Sciamma), a producer of seemingly distant projects for Birdy Nam Nam or Micky Green, a record company boss (the fantastic Marble Music), a director in his spare time, and even an actor, but, more than ever, he is a DJ capable of switching from hip-hop to house or techno, from UK garage to old school vibes and future turbines.

Among a thousand projects, Para One is back on the dance floor with “Club”, a new album which was not meant to be one, but believe it or not: it’s serious stuff! “The ‘Passion’ album is the background for this, as I decided to reshape it for my live act, explains Para One. I’ve rebuilt the tracks entirely, making live versions for festivals and bigger clubs. Then I found myself with a totally different album. It’s not a live album. The tracks have been modified and reinterpreted. Subtlety was not really an option, it had to hit kind of hard. The tracks had to sound real in a club situation and people are now meant to dance to them! It’s also a ‘treasure hunt’ kind of record with many references. It sounds like my DJ sets, when I mix many things and styles, old and new, because that’s how a club should sound. It’s a place where memories belong.”

The pop, melancholic and highly danceable “Passion”, was meant to be listened to at home or on quiet dance floors, but “Club” only retains the melodies and vocal hooks. It smells like sweat, joy and abandoned bodies. Packed with English acid house piano, huge beats, elegiac vocals, references to UK Garage, filtered french touch and house, “Club” dives into the heart of dance music. It’s a 3.0 rave emblem, a daring record to make people dance without selling out.

Besides founding her label, Danse Noire, releasing leftfield electronic music from the likes of IVVVO and Vaghe Stelle, Swiss-born, Nepalese-Tibetan electronic producer @aisha-devi’s latest solo productions are further testament to her personal evolution. The ‘Conscious Cunt’ EP explores different perspectives on womanhood and the dichotomy between materialistic femininity under societal pressure and spirituality.

“It’s an EP about sluts, awareness, death, and women in a patriarchal society… enlightenment, violence, resistance, mothers, daughters, consciousness, Guy Debord, Vedas and eternity. It's also a high-five to my grandmother who raised me and passed away early this year.” - Aïsha Devi

Lead track ‘Kim & The Wheel of Life’ is a whirling melodic vortex of melancholic echoing synths underlaid by deep rumbling kicks that morphs into a vocal-centric piece. The beatless ‘Aurat’, Devi’s second ‘vox tool’ of a series, is an Urdu/Hindi poem written by Pakistani feminist, Kishwar Naheed. Finally, ‘The Saviour on Spilled Blood’, a reference to motherhood, is a slow-building epic, using Devi’s dark, chanting voice to accumulate energy and emotion.

Part of the awesome art collective Them Hellas, Duckwrth aka Jared Lee has exhibited in both San Fran and New York, and recently debuted an accessories line called FANGRZ. On display here today on i-D is brand new track Psycho. Teaming up with Fitts of production duo Kickdrums (Kid Cudi, 50 Cent), the song channels vintage era-Outkast and Headphone Masterpiece Cody ChesnuTT. Part of a forthcoming project called NOWHERE, dropping on 21 August, Psycho is a dreamily distorted slice of funk packed with arch observations and pithy punchlines.

She loves playing and making records more than anything else in the whole world. She also enjoys singing.

Raised in an atmosphere bursting with passion for music, LOUISAHHH!!! (born Louisa Pillot) started singing and playing instruments at an early age before discovering a passion for DJing. Starting at age 17, sneaking into New York City clubs with fake IDs, LOUISAHHH!!! (a name chosen 'as a war cry or a shriek of delight') has since honed a style that is hard but deep, tough but tender.

After moving to Los Angeles in 2006, LOUISAHHH!!! became half of house-centric production duo NYCPARTYINFO, releasing records with Throne of Blood, Nurvous and Young Adults. However, it wasn't until friend Danny Daze requested some vocals for his group Senor Stereo that LOUISAHHH!!!'s talents as a singer began to shine, gaining more notoriety as modern classic 'Your Everything' climbed the deep house charts.

Amidst this whirlwind of excitement, a fateful meeting of French techno wonderkind, Brodinski spiraled into a fast friendship and eventual collaboration for Brodinski's young label, Bromance Records. With 'Let the Beat Control Your Body' and 'Nobody Rules the Streets' becoming peak-time anthems, and explosive vocal collaborations in the realms of both deep house and new techno, LOUISAHHH!!! was getting ready to release her own productions into the world.

2013 brings about LOUISAHHH!!!'s first serious solo EP on Bromance records. Supported by dynamic, emotional, ferocious DJ sets rife with technical finesse, LOUISAHHH!!! maintains that 'she is thrilled to be alive', and that her music is an active expression of this.
