Following on from the heavy-hitting chaos of 'SASSA', @stiff-pap unleash the opening track of their forthcoming 'TUFF TIME$' project on @cotch-international. A heady mix of traditional South African melody and heavily twisted electronics, the song also features vocals from Nkosi Zuthulele of internationally renowned Soweto Jazz outfit BCUC, who recently collaborated with Saul Williams and Femi Kuti, among others.

Stiff Pap said: "It’s basically about coming from a background of not having much but making due with what we have. We weren’t born with all the tools to succeed but our passion has always driven us to work hard and overcome all the obstacles on our way to become the best. It sets the tone for the whole project’s D.I.Y. do or die concept, where we’re basically throwing everything we have into our art and betting on ourselves to come out on top. We like the title because it’s a bit ambiguous, you could think of it as a storm wreaking havoc and we’re riding it like a wave unharmed or you could interpret it as us being the storm and we’re storming into the scene as rebels about to take over."

Conceived in the Mushroom Hour lab, SPAZA is a band with no permanent personnel, with each line-up assembled for the express purpose of recording completely improvised or workshopped material. For this, the initial salvo, SPAZA was put together from a group of musicians with individual and collective links to Johannesburg’s jazz, afro funk and experimental electro scenes, namely Siya Makuzeni (vocals, trombone & FX), Nosisi Nokukhanya Ngakane (vocals & FX), Waldo Luc Alexander (electric violin & FX pedals), Gontse Jnsq Makhene (percussion & vocals), Ariel Zamonsky (upright bass) and João Renato Orecchia Zúñiga (synthesizers & electronics).
