Skee Mask is one of dance music's greatest crossover stories of the past decade, with new albums greeted with the attention usually reserved for an Aphex Twin or a Caribou. ("Loved seeing this on r/indieheads," said one Reddit user, on the release of the 2021 LP Pool.) It's not hard to understand why: albums like Compro, he blends well-worn dance music tropes with incredible, detailed soundscapes and spine-tingling melodies. And on his 12-inches, he brings that sensibility to the dance floor, with an approach probably best described as articulate. Even on his most ambient of tracks, everything is in its right place. Along with founders the Zenker Brothers, his music outlines everything that makes Munich outfit Ilian Tape one of the best techno labels going.

On the decks, it's kind of a different story. It might surprise you if you only know his albums, but Skee Mask is an incredible DJ, balancing his predilection for hip-hop and UK-informed sounds with laser-focused techno. He can adapt to all sorts of situations—there's an incredible recording of him DJing with four of the best grime and drum & bass MCs in the business—and on his RA Podcast he focuses on the techno side of things, with nearly two hours of pacey techno and creative mixing, with dips into acid, electro, garage and more. It's a party-starting mix from a genuine star, perfect for getting through the holiday doldrums or pre-gaming your NYE plans. Like Skee Mask's best records, it's something to enjoy in any number of settings.

@giuliatess: "In this mix, I wanted to encapsulate the beats and hedonistic vibe from the '90s dance music and club scene - which is, I think, what I tried to reflect throughout my whole EP.

I put quite a few progressive breaks in there - something that has become a bit of a staple in my music and my sets (or so I’ve been told!). It’s become a bit of an obsession, so it was great to be able to channel that in this mix. This mix was created to get your blood pumping and I hope it can achieve that in whatever environment that means to the listener - whether it's to be played on a treadmill, a spin class or the afters at the office Christmas party, I want it to encourage people to move and get that huge lift that dance music is made to do."

OOOD - Source Confirmed [Full Album Mix] (OUT NOW!)

Two hours of house and techno from @olateks - the opening set at the Warsaw leg of Mixmag and Burn Energy's 2024 Tour.

The second stop on the Burn Energy Tour 2024 put focus on the Polish capital with a full throttle line-up headlined by Dutch master of euphoria KI/KI, followed by Sept, Hekato and Ola Teks at the spectacular Palace of Culture and Science.

The Burn Energy Tour’s lens on Warsaw’s nightlife is a testament to the game-changing work being achieved in the city, with promoters and collectives like Narocz 13, Tainspotting, Oramics and INSTYUT, and clubs such as Smolna, Luzztro and Jasna 1, forging a distinct musical identity in the city that is the best it's ever been.

In the daytime, Mixmag and Burn presented a workshop with The Blu Mantic interviewing Sept, Ola Teks and Cyryl on the topic of 'How to run your own club night'. Through their own parties such as DUEL and Move Mózg, these artists have changed the landscape of Warsaw’s dance music scene, throwing parties in interesting and offbeat locations, pushing new sounds to the fore, standing for inclusive values, and opening the minds of the next generation. Practical advice was given on how to conceptualise and build your own events, helping to inspire new members of the club community and progress the future of the scene with fresh energy.

Warsaw was the second stop on the Burn Energy Tour 2024, following the debut event in Budapest with additional stops in Italy and Spain.

“We are very happy to share this recording of our opening set at Chalet Berlin on the New Years Day of 2016 with you all. It was the fourth gig on our 50+ hour NYE marathon session and we started spinning straight after arriving in Berlin. Sometimes when you push yourself past the moment of physical exhaustion something interesting happens. You stop thinking about stuff and switch to your auto pilot, a more natural state of mind where you open yourself up to the music and allow your thoughts to float away with the sound. This was exactly what happened in Berlin. Listen to how we carefully warm up the club and rejuvenate ourselves with some of our favourite downtempo and house tracks, slowly getting back into the party mode. Our thanks go out to Maralina and crew at Chalet, Stijn, Glenn and crew at ZeeZout, all the party people that joined us during the NYE marathon and offcourse you for listening. Today we’re all super hyped for for Lente Kabinet this weekend so to get us even more excited we’ve got Job Jobse making his entry to the series. He will play a closing set at the festival and as resident at De School is a master for serving up the perfect record at the perfect time. Initially a slow burner, he’s long been loved by Amsterdam locals for his richly melodic take on house, techno, Italo and disco, and himself is happy to call it trance. 

It’s certainly a spell being and emotional style that characterises his work here. With something of an old school slant, there are stiff vocal cuts and robotic grooves that slowly loosen up and turn to more hands in the air and zoned out fair before getting more sci-fi and occult later on. As ever with Jobse, it’s feel good and fun without being obvious.
