2025: The Mix

bela (they/them) is a South Korean musician/DJ and a performance artist splitting their time between Berlin and Prague. As a DJ, bela opts for system music on a deeper and heavier rhythmic quest. They started appearing in the Seoul scene back in 2017, debuting at the one and only Cakeshop. Since then, they have played at clubs like Tresor, Säule, ALL Shanghai, and Planeta Za. Away from the DJ history, bela is known for their live performance in queer voice and ritual of grief, growling and screaming to Korean traditional rhythms across numerous festivals: Unsound Kraków, Dripping NY, Rewire, and Le Guess Who? etc. Their most recent LP “Noise and Cries” was released on Subtext and Unsound in 2024.

"Following the beats alone can be a journey of true learning. Today I am channeling somewhere between steppers in the UK and OHM in Berlin, where the lesson comes from the 140s, dubstep, grime, half-step, garage, bass experiments between UK and Germany. I am gathering all kinds of splits to compensate for sucking at rhythm games - and then, I am floating into the triplets, inevitably drifting away into the ever-addictive Monterreian prehispanica wormhole."

Welcome to the fourth instalment of the FMB Discord Mixtape. Joining us this time, we welcome Surrealist, a duo from Bristol. They take their sound from a number of well-known underground labels, most notably Livity Sound, Ilian Tape, Voam, Hessle Audio, TraTraTrax and many more. Their production style has varied over the last few years and has now settled on releasing hard hitting UK Techno on their closely partnered label Bloxe. Their most notable release to date was under their previous alias Spice Merchants with a playful multi-BPM track called Little Bit Dub. This track went on to have support from the likes of Two Shell, Bklava, Phasmid, Justin Jay and Jay Carder, who featured it on Radio One. Their mix today pays tribute to that track with a hard-hitting unreleased remix alongside a number of other hard-hitting tracks from artists who have heavily inspired the pair.

Here's how they discovered Bicep:

It’s hard to put a date on when we first discovered Bicep, for me I was at a party in 2017, it was late in the night and someone requested Glue, I hadn't heard it before, but a mate backed it, so it we chucked it on through the aux. It really resonated well with myself and everyone else so we put on Aura straight after. Soon after the Printworks live show came out and it’s fair to say they were a household name after that. I remember seeing them at WHP in 2019 and they dropped Atlas, green and blue lasers flying everywhere, I think it’s fair to say that’s a moment I will never forget.

Yetsuby: "I put a lot of thought into what music to include in this set, finally I played tracks that I’ve genuinely enjoyed playing on the dancefloor, as well as those that feel incredibly fresh and innovative—regardless of their release date or whether they were made for the dancefloor. The overall genres are hard drum, bass music, and breaks, and as the set progresses, it gets harder and more massive. It’s energetic, intense, yet also aesthetically refined. You might even find yourself speeding if you listen while driving. I’ve also included tracks from some of my favourite Seoul-based producers, so be sure to check out the tracklist."

@mountkimbie deliver a mix themed around the '95'-'96 football season and duly crammed with ‘90s dance music anthems., celebrating the release of their new themed football jerseys.

"The idea I had for this mix came from those football compilations on YouTube with really shit music, that great but trash dance music. It’s part of the experience of watching football on YouTube, it’s a very particular sound of dance music. I wanted to go back to ‘95 or ‘96 when this original PSV jersey was released, and only play tracks from then. I basically want to provide a slight alternative to the YouTube football watching experience."

@biminibabes was shaped in the queer club scene but after becoming a TV sensation in 2019 they were discouraged from pursuing their passion for dance music., Now, the East London drag icon and DJ is firmly back in that world.

"This mix is a riot in rhythm. It opens with Madonna’s voice—a reminder that freedom of expression isn’t up for debate—and spirals into something sexier: a nod to the queer underground and the artists that inspire me. Then it starts getting moodier before it turns. Darker. Sweatier. More defiant. I wanted to take listeners on a journey—from dreamy dissociation to full-bodied release. It’s chaotic in the best way: laced with political rage and drenched in dancefloor ecstasy, because music should make you feel every kind of emotion. It’s gritty. It’s euphoric. It’s queer liberation in sonic form.

There are tracks that feel like protest chants and moments of blissful release. I didn't want a mix that was tied to one genre, it's genre-bending. At its core, it’s about resistance, joy, and the urgent belief that there’s still something worth fighting for.
