Steffen’s visits in Prague are usually quite memorable. Breathing in a fresh vibe on the anniversary evening in the frontyard, magnetising the early morning crowd at Planeta, smoking out the backstage rave; he always know what records to pack when coming to Prague. Recently he made his mark when opening a night before Aleksi Perälä’s live performance at Lunchmeat Teknologi in May 2023, where he filled the floor instantly with a selection of soft and heavy techno. To refresh the memory, we’re publishing an extract from the set as the 29th episode of our podcast.

Silent Servant is the primary pseudonym of California electronic artist Juan Mendez, who produces techno with a heavy post-punk/industrial influence. He first began releasing material as Silent Servant during the mid-2000s, when he was a key member of the influential techno collective Sandwell District. Following numerous well-received underground singles, he made a major impact on the techno world with Negative Fascination, his acclaimed 2012 full-length debut. Following Mendez's co-founding of the Jealous God label in 2013, as well as several singles and collaborations with the likes of Marcel Dettmann and Phase Fatale, Silent Servant released his second album, the more overtly EBM-influenced Shadows of Death and Desire, in 2018.  2023 sees Mendez continuing to Play the US and Europe, New releases On L.I.E.S., Tresor and maintaining his sixth year of the Optimistic Decay radio show on NTS.

Xanexx [Hexa Records, SCOPÁVIK, Peaking Too Early / Republic of Korea]

In Korea's short electronic music culture, Xanexx has been a DJ and producer in the electronic music industry in Seoul since 2008. After he decided to present himself as 'Xanexx', he began to focus on techno music. This led him to establish the label "Hexa Records" and to release EP Grenzsituation to out his techno works.

Also he was a resident DJ of the solid techno club in Seoul, Vurt. He is still a DJ who does not miss various clubs and festivals in Seoul.

Xanexx is a representative techno label/podcast in Korea, SCOPIVIK, which includes Refracted, Evigt Mörker, Pharaoh & Yogg, and Pris. He released another EP that included remixes of Deep Techno artists. He showed his solid sound arrangement by releasing the Alpha Range full length album in 2022.

The sounds he articulate act more as a extended role filling unoccupied space, rather expressing accurate scales. Each element of sounds creates space releasing presence, falling into place one another without reference to its dissoant meaning. And it inculcates experience of original sentiment and sense, not the prevalent one.

한국의 짧은 전자 음악 문화 속에서, Xanexx는 2008년부터 서울을 기반으로 DJ/프로듀서로 활동해왔다. 그는 자신을 Xanexx라고 지칭하면서부터 이전의 The Riotz 활동과 구분되는 테크노 음악 작업에 집중하기 시작했다. 이후 그는 ‘Hexa Records’라는 레이블을 설립하고, ‘Grenzsituation’ EP를 발매하여 테크노에 깊이 뿌리를 두는 음악적 자아를 선보였다.

또한 그는 서울 최초의 테크노 클럽인 ‘Vurt’의 레지던트 DJ로 활동하였으며, 그 기간동안 한국 테크노의 공연예술적 위치를 확립했다. Vurt에서 독립한 이후 그는 여전히 서울의 다양한 클럽과 축제를 놓치지 않는 DJ로 한국의 테크노 씬을 대표하고 있다.

Xanexx는 한국의 대표적인 테크노 레이블/팟캐스트인 SCOPIVIK을 통해 Refracted, Evigt Mörker, Pharaoh & Yogg, 그리고 Pris와 같은 딥 테크노 아티스트들의 리믹스가 포함된 EP를 발매했다. 또한, 2022년에 ‘Alpha Range’ 정규 앨범을 발매함으로써 탄탄한 사운드 디자인 작업을 보여주었다.

그가 표현하는 소리는 정확한 척도를 표현하기보다는 비어있는 공간을 채우는 확장된 역할로 작용한다. 사운드 속 각 불협화음적 요소는 공간을 창조하고 해방하는 존재감을 만들어낸다. 그리고 마침내 그의 사운드는 춤에 국한되지 않고 독창적인 감정과 감각의 경험을 심어준다.

Yon Kim takes much of her inspiration from noise. She delivers diverse textures to the floor through a variety of non-standardized variations and a playful array of sounds. She exposes herself by expressing inner noises with wit from melting, stirring, and blowing up various emotions into music.

Suzan은 무수한 연결점들 속 소리와 박자들이 점점 쌓이기도 흩어지기도 하는 무한한 상상의 세계를 그린다. 빛과 어둠 속에서 결국 한 점으로 연결되어 이어지는 댄스 플로어를 꿈꾼다.

Suzan depicts an imaginary endless world where sounds and beats gradually accumulate and disperse in countless connected points. He dreams of a dancefloor where light and darkness eventually connect to our own point.

The seventh episode of 꿈 Kkum is the set from DJ Yazi who is half of an improvisation DJ unit - 'Twin Peaks' and a Techno/Ambient/Experimental Artist based in Tokyo.
His 78min Kkum set connected by a strong focus on deep and tripped out grooves, moves fluidly across styles.

DJ Yazi는 90년대 중반부터 도쿄의 악명높은 아방가르드 힙합그룹 Think Tank의 멤버로 활동해왔다. 이 그룹은 레이블 Black Smoker Records로 발전하였고, 또한 El Nino라는 이름의 실험적인 클럽 나잇 시리즈를 만들었는데, DJ Yazi는 지난 20년간 El Nino의 레지던트 디제이로 활약하고 있다. 
DJ Yazi의 음악적 정체성은 힙합의 정신, 덥과 재즈의 격렬함, 테크노의 강렬함, 그리고 하우스의 행복감으로부터 만들어졌으며, 이러한 스펙트럼을 통해 디제이로써 다양한 스타일을 유연하게 가로지르며 청중들을 깊은 내면의 여행으로 안내한다. 데크를 다루는 Yazi의 정밀한 솜씨는 그가 오랜 세월동안 DJ로써의 예술활동에 몰두해 있었음을 명백하게 보여주고 있다. 또한, 그는 Haruka와 함께 즉흥 DJ/LIVE 유닛인 Twin Peak의 멤버로도 활동하고 있으며, Takaaki Itoh와 함께 도쿄의 클럽 Contact에서 정기적으로 열리는 Konvektion이라는 이름의 테크노 나잇을 진행해오고 있다. 
DJ Yazi는 2017년 Berlin Atonal이 도쿄에서 주최한 파티 New Assembly에서 플레이한 이후, 유럽의 페스티벌 디렉터들의 관심을 사로잡았고, 이후 베를린의 클럽 Tresor에서 정기적으로 열리는 파티 Herrensauna와 Berlin Atonal 2017에서 자신의 첫 유럽 데뷔무대를 가졌다. 

DJ Yazi has been active since the mid-1990s,  as a member of Tokyo’s notoriously avant-garde hip hop group called Think Tank. The record label Black Smoker Records founded by the group took their experimentalism to a series of club nights called El Nino, and DJ Yazi remains its resident for two decades. Drawing inspiration from across the musical spectrum: the mentality of hip hop, the intensity of dub and jazz, the ferocity of techno and the euphoria of house. As a DJ he moves fluidly across styles, with his sets connected by a strong focus on deep and tripped out grooves. 
His attention to details, precision and masterful control over the decks clearly show his long time involvement in this art form. He also performs with Haruka as Twin Peaks, an improvisational live/ DJ hybrid act. He currently hosts a regular techno/ industrial themed night called Konvektion at Contact, Tokyo together with Takaaki Itoh. After appearing in a Tokyo satellite event series New Assembly presented by Berlin Atonal in early 2017, he caught the attention of the festival directors, and made his European debut in Berlin playing Herrensauna at Tresor and Berlin Atonal 2017.
