My work has a strong interest in systems and generative processes in art and music - I have developed a number of software applications which allow me to work with these processes in a live performance environment. I usually work from heavily processed samples of live instruments and field recordings - Although there is a strong systems based element in my work, I tend to work though a process of improvisation with the samples in real time to generate the work. I aim to create immersive work which gradually develops over time and creates a sense of space and place,and generates a strong emotional response in the listener.

My 33 1/3 series book about the Aphex Twin album <i>Selected Ambient Works Volume II</i> was published in 2014. The book was one of the top 5 bestselling titles for the calendar year, and in 2015 was ranked by Pitchfork as one of the "33 best" of the 100-plus books in the 33 1/3 series. It has subsequently been translated into Japanese (2019) and Spanish (2018)

Since 2012 I have moderated the Disquiet Junto group, which began on SoundCloud. More at disquiet.com/junto. 

I've written for Nature, Pitchfork, The Wire, Down Beat, Boing Boing, NewMusicBox, Red Bull Music Academy, Art Practical, the website of The Atlantic, and many other publications. 

I've exhibited sound art at galleries in Los Angeles (Crewest), Manhattan (apex art), and Dubai (DUTAC), and I had a audio-visual installation at the San Jose Museum of Art as part of its 45th anniversary.

And since 1996 I've run the website Disquiet.com about the intersection of sound, art, and technology.

History of Beck Institute

Dr. Beck developed Cognitive Therapy (CT), also known as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) in the 1960s. The original Center for Cognitive Therapy at Penn served as an important training ground for cognitive behavior therapists. Still, Dr. Beck and his daughter, Dr. Judith Beck, had long wished to establish a new clinical setting that would provide state-of-the-art psychotherapy and training opportunities for professionals worldwide and at all levels.  In 1994, they established the Beck Institute at its present site in Bala Cynwyd, in suburban Philadelphia.

In recognition of Dr. Beck’s scholarship and therapeutic model, the international psychotherapeutic community has acknowledged his expertise in the field of mental health. In fact, Centers for Cognitive Therapy have been established all over the world by clinicians, researchers, and academics who trained at the original center in Philadelphia or at Beck Institute.

To experience The TANK is visceral; each person who stands inside finds herself at the center of a world made up of sound. It is transformational.

The TANK, a 60-foot-tall, 30-foot-across, rusted and abandoned steel water tank, was discovered in Rangely, Colorado by sound artist and sonic thinker Bruce Odland in 1976. An acoustical marvel, with a forty-seconds-long, shifting, swirling reverberation, The TANK became a favorite unofficial, off-the-grid recording venue for Colorado musicians for nearly four decades.   

In 2012, the TANK was facing an uncertain future. Friends of The TANK — an eclectic group of artists, sonic explorers, and practical minds, all bound together by the experience of The TANK — was formed to save the sonic treasure from demolition. With contributions from more than a thousand Kickstarter backers over two campaigns, and the remarkable and ever-growing support of the people, businesses, and governments of the town of Rangely and Rio Blanco County, The TANK was purchased, restored, and repurposed, and is now home to The TANK Center for Sonic Arts

Now in its second season, The TANK Center for Sonic Arts seeks to share The TANK through artistic development, sonic research, education, and community outreach; to preserve, protect, and share The TANK; and to offer a unique and transformative audio laboratory for musicians, sound artists, educators, sonic tourists, and the community in a magnificent acoustic resource.
